August 27, 2003 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Chris Goodman has only made two starts and five appearances with the Vermont Expos, but he has certainly made his presence felt in his short tenure.
Goodman scattered four hits over eight innings and Kory Casto went 4-for-4 with one run and one RBI as Vermont defeated the Lowell Spinners 2-1 in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Centennial Field.
Goodman (2-0), who joined Vermont from the Gulf Coast League on August 7th, allowed one run with no walks and eight strikeouts over his eight innings, the longest outing of the season for the Expos. Goodman has now allowed just two earned runs over 25.0 innings (0.72 ERA) in his five appearances with 5 walks and 19 strikeouts.
After retiring the final 13 batters he faced in his last start on August 23rd with Aberdeen, Goodman set down the first six batters he saw on Wednesday. He gav up two hits in the third, one in the fourth and one in the fifth before retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced (only baserunner on an error in eighth).
The Spinners had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Robert Evans scored from first base on a sacrifice bunt. Evans was running from first on a pitch to Ignacio Suarez, who bunted the ball in front of the plate. Evans rounded second and took off for third as the ball went to first base for the out on the sac bunt. Expos first baseman Josh Whitesell tried to throw out Evans at third, but his throw got past third baseman Brad Ditter and Evans was able to trot home.
The Expos tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Casto led off the inning with a single, stole second base and scored on a two-out RBI single by Ditter. Vermont then took the lead in the fifth on a two-out single to right from Casto to score Jason Tuttle with the go ahead run.
The Spinners best chance to score after the fifth inning was the eighth with Evans on third base with two outs. But Goodman struckout Scooter Jordan to end the threat and Warmar Gomez worked around a two-out walk in the ninth inning to pick up his first save of the year.
Jose Vaquedano (7-3) gave up two runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts over six innings to take the loss for Lowell (36-31), which had won seven of its last eight games against Vermont.
Casto's 4-for-4 night was the second four-hit game of the season for a Vermont batter, while Ditter was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Vermont (17-51) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory and the Expos are now 8-6 in one-run games this season, including one-run victories in each of their last five wins.
Vermont and Lowell will play game two of this two-game series with Nehomar Ochoa (1-0, 2.12 ERA) on the mound for the Expos.
