Expos Can't Get Started after Delay

TROY, NY --- Vermont and Tri-City waited two and a half hours past their scheduled start time of 7:00 p.m. to begin Tuesday night's New York-Penn League game. Apparantly nobody told the Expos that the game started.

After scoring just one run in each of their last five road games, the Expos couldn't even do that as the Tri-City ValleyCats pounded out an 11-0 over Vermont at Bruno Stadium.

The Expos were outscored 16-2 in the three-game sweep for Tri-City, giving the ValleyCats 13 wins in 15 games with Vermont in 2003.

The Expos also saw their league-low team batting average fall to .209, just one point better than the New York-Penn League record-low of .208 set by Vermont in 2001. Jason Tuttle led off the game with a single, but the Expos only other hits came with one-out in the fifth and a leadoff single in the eighth.

It is also the 10th time this season that the Expos have allowed double-figure runs in a game and the sixth time this season that Vermont has lost by double figures. Nick Long (3-8) allowed six runs (three earned) over four innings, while Tyler Kirkman gave up four runs on four hits in recording just two outs in the fifth inning.

Tri-City starter Matt Albers (4-4) gave up just two singles with no walks and 10 strikeouts over the first seven innings, while Ryan Yurk one hit with one walk and two strikeouts in two innings. Chad Prosser went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, while Chad Robinson was 3-for-5 with a solo home run for the ValleyCats. Tri-City (40-28) is now just one-half game behind Oneonta for first-place in the Stedler Division.

Vermont, which was held to just three hits in its seventh shutout loss of the season, has now lost six straight road games and have been outscored 28-5 in those six games. The Expos are now 4-30 on the road this season and have been outscored 228-71 in those 34 games.

Luckily the Expos return home to play five of their final eight games of the season. Vermont (16-51) is only 12-21 at Centennial Field this season, but the Expos have won four of their last six in Burlington. Vermont will host the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday and Thursday with Chris Goodman (1-0, 0.53 ERA) and Nehomar Ochoa (1-0, 2.12 ERA) starting the games for the Expos.
