Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Wild (21-19-5-4, 51 points) were defeated by the Rockford IceHogs (26-21-4-3, 59 points) 4-2 in front of 6,814 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday. IceHogs forward Brandon Pirri scored a pair of goals, including the game-winning tally with 4:58 remaining in regulation. Iowa forward Curt Gogol and defender Jonathon Blum each scored in the defeat. Wild goalie John Curry (6-3-2) stopped 26 shots as his club moved to a 10-13-3-1 record at home. Rockford goalie Jason LaBarbera (8-6-2) made 32 saves, helping his team sweep the weekend series. Iowa heads out for three straight on the road, starting this Wednesday at 6:05 PM CT in Rochester.
The IceHogs opened the scoring at 14:53 of the first period with a goal by Jeremy Morin, his team-leading 17th goal of the season. The forward carried the puck around a Wild defender and slipped the puck past Iowa goalie John Curry. IceHogs defenseman Klas Dahlbeck and forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard each helped set up the goal. Rockford continued to score at 18:37 with a goal by Brandon Pirri, giving his club a 2-0 lead. The center blasted a shot from the slot, beating Curry five-hole. Rockford forwards Terry Broadhurst and Brandon Mashinter each picked up an assist on the play. The Wild answered back with a goal 1:11 later by Curt Gogol. The left wing buried a rebound for his fourth goal of the season, his first with the Wild. Iowa forward Taylor Matson and Landry each picked up an assist, cutting Rockford's lead in half at 2-1.
After a scoreless second period, the Wild tied the game off a power-play goal at 10:18 by Jonathon Blum. The defenseman rifled the puck from the right-wing circle, scoring his sixth goal of the season. Iowa forwards Zack Phillips and Kris Foucault each picked up an assist on the game-tying goal. The IceHogs countered at 15:02 with a goal by Pirri, giving his team a 3-2 lead. The forward carried the puck from behind the Iowa net, sneaking in his eighth goal of the season. Bouchard picked up an assist on the play. Rockford forward Brandon Mashinter scored an empty-net goal with 26 seconds remaining in the game. Dahlbeck and defender Zach Miskovic each picked up an assist on the game's final goal.
The Wild begins a three-game road trip on Wednesday in Rochester at 6:05 p.m. (CT). The team plays a pair of games at Lake Erie before returning home on Tuesday, Feb. 25 for a 5:35 p.m. faceoff with Rockford. The game is a $2 Tuesday, where fans can purchase any level ticket with a $2 discount. Patrons will also be able to purchase $2 sodas, $2 popcorns and $2 10-ounce domestic drafts (21 and older - only through first period of play). Select merchandise items will also be discounted by $2. The team will also host the Rochester Americans at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27.
