St. John's IceCaps News Release
Despite outshooting the Manchester Monarchs 43-25, the St. John's IceCaps fell 4-3 in a shootout Sunday afternoon at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, NH.
Carl Klingberg, Adam Lowry and John Albert scored in regulation but Martin Jones denied all four shooters in the shootout in a first star effort.
Michael Hutchinson stopped 21-of-24 for St. John's in the loss, while Zach Redmond notched two assists.
After a scoreless first, Steve Quailer scored the game's first goal on an odd-man rush 5:24 into the second period. Quailer took a pass and patiently waited as an IceCaps defender slid past him before wristing a shot past Hutchinson to make it 1-0.
Just minutes later, Klingberg tied things at one with his 14th of the season. Eric O'Dell dropped the puck for Klingberg in the high slot and the Swede fired one past Jones to even the score.
Past the midway point of the period, the IceCaps jumped ahead on Lowry's 13th. After some tremendous work by Jerome Samson along the boards to get the puck to Mouillierat, Lowry was the recipient of a pass in front and the rookie pivot went to the backhand to beat Jones along the ice, giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage.
The IceCaps surrendered the tying goal with just 2.2 seconds left in the second period on Nick Deslauriers' 16th of the season. Derek Forbort's point shot got through and was stopped but Deslauriers persisted and banged the rebound past Hutchinson to send the teams to the dressing room all square at two apiece.
However, the IceCaps climbed back on top early in the third on Albert's ninth. Ben Chiarot's shot from the left point was redirected in front by Albert and over Jones' shoulder to put St. John's up 3-2.
The lead was short-lived as Desluariers potted his second of the game at 7:30 of the third. After a failed IceCaps power play, Tyler Toffoli pressured Hutchinson behind the net and forced a turnover, and Deslauriers fired it into an open net past the out-of-position St. John's goaltender to make it 3-3.
With neither team able to find the twine in overtime, the Monarchs got goals from Nick Shore and Jordan Weal in the shootout to earn the two points.
