Modesto Nuts News Release
Modesto, CA. - Shane Hoelscher's blast backed Sam Howard's strong outing as the Modesto Nuts won their home opener over the Stockton Ports 5-2 at John Thurman Field on Thursday night.
Shane Hoelscher cracked a three-run dinger on a 3-0 pitch off Ports (3-4) starter Brett Graves (L, 0-1) with two outs in the third. The Nuts (3-4) added on two more runs in the fourth. The first came from Wes Rogers on a RBI fielder's choice. Rogers finished his day 2-for-4.
The second run came in on a catcher's balk. Home plate umpire Kyle Wallace awarded Max White home plate when Ports catcher Argenis Raga was ruled to have come out of the catcher's box before the pitcher Graves released the baseball.
Sam Howard (W, 1-0) worked 5.1 innings allowing just one single with six strikeouts and three walks.
Jerry Vasto (S, 1/2) worked around a pair of singles to close out the win for the Nuts.
Game two of the four-game series against the Ports starts at 7:05 p.m. on Friday night. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:10 p.m.
