Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes won their fourth consecutive game Thursday night, beating the Lake Elsinore Storm, 4-1 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.
Grant Holmes (1-0) was the story of the night for Rancho. The 20-year-old former first round pick pitched six shutout innings, making it the second consecutive start that Holmes hasn't allowed an earned run. He surrendered just five hits and struck out seven.
Rancho Cucamonga scored their first two runs in the second inning. With one out, Johan Mieses was hit by a pitch by Martires Arias (0-1), who struggled with his command Thursday. Yusniel Diaz followed with his first career triple, plating Mieses and giving Rancho the 1-0 lead. The Quakes got their second run thanks to a sacrifice fly by Paul Hoenecke that made it 2-0 Rancho.
The Quakes scored their third run in the sixth inning. Andrew Toles led off the frame with his third double of the season, and was able to advance to third base after Arias uncorked a wild pitch. Rancho Cucamonga made it 3-0 after Tim Locastro hit a sacrifice fly to right field. It was Locastro's third sacrifice fly of the season.
Rancho scored their fourth and final run in the ninth inning. Matt Beaty led off with a single, and then Mieses followed by clobbering a Colby Blueberg fastball off the center field wall for his first triple of the year, scoring Beaty to make it 4-0 Quakes.
Joe Broussard followed Holmes' scoreless outing with two scoreless innings of his own out of the Quakes bullpen. He allowed three hits and struck out one, earning his first hold of the season.
The Storm scored their lone run off of Quakes reliever Chris Powell in the ninth.
Rancho Cucamonga now has a season-high four-game win streak after taking game one of the four-game series in Lake Elsinore.
The Quakes (5-3), will send right-handed pitcher Tommy Bergjans (0-0) to the hill Friday night, while Lake Elsinore will counter with righty Michael Kelly (0-0). Bergjans will look to get back on track after struggling in his first start of the year, in which he allowed six runs (five earned) in 4.1 innings of work. Game time from Lake Elsinore on Friday is 7:00pm.
The Quakes will return home on Thursday, April 21st, as they open a four-game home stand against Visalia. Thursday the 21st is another Thirsty Thursday, sponsored by Green-Lite Windows and Doors, as fans can enjoy $2 Pepsi products, $3 domestic 16-oz drafts and $4 16-oz premium drafts, wine, champagne and margaritas. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
