St. Lucie Mets News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - K.C. Hobson smacked the go-ahead two-run double and the Dunedin bullpen shut out St. Lucie as the Blue Jays defeated the Mets 4-2 on Saturday at Auto Exchange Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Jays split the four-game series 2-2. The loss by the Mets, coupled with Fort Myers' 4-3 win over Lakeland, puts the Mets 1.5 games behind Fort Myers for first place in the Florida State League South Division with just eight games remaining in the first half.
Hobson broke a 2-2 tie in the third when he smacked a double off of Steven Matz down the first place line to score Dalton Pompey and Marcus Knecht.
That would be enough run support for Dunedin's bullpen. Four relievers combine to shut out the Mets in the final four innings. Chad Girado pitched out a major jam in the sixth when he loaded the bases with one out. He fell behind Cole Frenzel 3-1, but rallied for a strikeout, then got Eudy Pina to ground out.
Danny Barnes pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fourth save.
Girodo, Wil Browning and Tony Davis all notched holds.
Blue Jays starter Daniel Norris got the win. He gave up four his and two runs while striking out seven over five innings.
Matz took the loss. He was knocked for eight hits and four runs in six innings. It was the first start in which Matz allowed more than two earned runs.
Dunedin struck for two runs in the first inning. Knecht grounded out to score Dwight Smith, Jr., from third. Hobson followed with an RBI single to plate Pompey.
The Mets answered with a run in the second. Frenzel hit a double to right to score Jairo Perez, who had reached on a triple.
Cam Maron briefly tied the game 2-2 in the third when he hit a double to deep center field that brought home Maikis De La Cruz. Unfortunately, that would be the last big hit for the Mets. They went just 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position.
Perez went 2 for 4 in the loss. He has multi hits in four straight games and has upped his league leading average to .360.
Hobson went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. In the series he was 8 for 14 with six RBIs.
The Mets (35-27) return home on Sunday to face a red hot Palm Beach team. The Cardinals (31-31) have won five in a row. First pitch at Tradition Field is at 4 p.m.
