Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - For the second consecutive night and for the third time in the four-game series, the Palm Beach Cardinals won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday night, beating the Clearwater Threshers 5-4 at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals swept the set against the Sharks and have won a season-high five straight games.
With runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Bosco laced a pitch from Clearwater reliever Jordan Guth deep into the gap in right-center field. Alex Mejia, who led off the inning with a single, scored from second on the play to break a 4-4 tie and wrap up the four-game sweep.
Guth also allowed the game-ending hit in the Cardinals' 4-3 victory on Wednesday night. Iden Nazario (2-0) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to get the win, just as he did on Wednesday.
The Cardinals (31-31) trailed 4-2 heading into the seventh but scored two runs on two wild pitches in the inning to tie the game 4-4. Clearwater starter Colin Kleven skipped two balls to the backstop allowing Bruce Caldwell and Bosco to score in the frame. Caldwell tripled off the wall in left-center and Bosco laid down a bunt single before eventually touching home.
Palm Beach scored three runs via wild pitches from Kleven and also capitalized on a Clearwater error to score a run in the game. Bosco's game-winning hit and RBI was the only run driven in for the Birds on the evening.
Charlie Tilson and Ildemaro Vargas hit back-to-back singles to start the first inning and Tilson got the Cardinals on the board on Kleven's first wild pitch.
A Threshers run in the second inning tied the game, but Tilson notched his second hit and run scored in the third inning to help the Cardinals reclaim the one-run advantage at 2-1.
Tilson legged out an infield single in the inning and later scored on a throwing error by Kleven.
The Sharks scored three runs in the fifth off Palm Beach starter Nick Petree. Overall, Petree allowed four runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Three straight Clearwater hits in the fifth chased Petree from the game in favor of Corey Baker.
Baker fanned two in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and Sam Tuivailala kept the Sharks off the board for the seventh and eighth innings. Tuivailala struck out four batters on the night.
Mejia's hit in the ninth inning extended his hitting streak to 12 games - the longest active streak in the Florida State League. The streak is tied for the longest on the team this year. Breyvic Valera hit safely in 12 straight games from April 3-15.
The Cardinals will travel to Port St. Lucie on Sunday and Monday to take on the Mets for a two-game series. RH Thomas Lee (4-3, 2.95) will start on Sunday for Palm Beach against RH Michael Fulmer (2-5, 4.59) for St. Lucie. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
A win would put the Cardinals above .500 for the first time since April 14 (6-5).
