Yankees Fall 4-1, Split Series

TAMPA, Fla. - In a game that featured Major League talent, the Tampa Yankees (30-32) fell 4-1 to the Charlotte Stone Crabs (30-30) on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Charlotte featured two Major League stars on rehab assignments as RHP Jeremy Hellickson got the start and catcher Ryan Hanigan batted second.

Hellickson tossed three scoreless innings, scattering two hits and a walk while striking out two.

RHP Jaron Long made his TY debut with his first start in High-A ball since being called up from Charleston on Thursday.

Hanigan gave the Stone Crabs a lead in the third. With a man on first and two outs, the Rays catcher belted a home run off the scoreboard in left field, giving Charlotte a 2-0 lead. Hanigan reached on a fielding error later in the game and finished the night going 1-for-4 with a HR and two RBI.

Leadoff man Tommy Coyle hit his fourth home run of the year into the Walgreens Deck in right field against Long in the fifth. The solo shot gave Charlotte a 3-0 advantage.

Long (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks, striking out five over five innings. The righty allowed two home runs after not allowing any in his 49.1 innings with Low-A Charleston.

RHP Reinaldo Lopez entered the game in the fourth for Charlotte after originally being slated as the starter. Lopez (4-2) allowed one unearned run on three hits and four walks in five innings.

The Stone Crabs tacked on another run in the sixth. Kes Carter greeted reliever Stefan Lopez with a double and later scored on a single by Tyler Goeddel.

Tampa scored its lone run off Lopez in the sixth. Jake Cave reached on a fielding error by Leonardo Reginatto at shortstop and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cito Culver. Lopez proceeded to walk Greg Bird, Dante Bichette Jr. and Matt Snyder, forcing home Cave. Zach Wilson then grounded into a double play, ending the threat.

LHP Kevin Brandt earned his third save for the Stone Crabs after pitching a scoreless ninth.

Snyder picked up the lone RBI for Tampa, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Bird and Bichette each drew two walks in 0-for-2 efforts. RHP Alex Smith retired six of the seven batters he faced in the eighth and ninth, picking up three strikeouts.

Up next, the T-Yanks hit the road for two games in Brevard County against the Manatees on Sunday and Monday. Tampa then travels to Clearwater for one game against the Threshers on Tuesday before returning home for a double-header against The Threshers on Thursday, June 12th at 5:00pm.

Thursday's twin-bill at Steinbrenner Field will be a Throwback Thursday, presented by 98.7 The Fan, fans can enjoy throwback prices, such as reserved tickets for $2 and general admission for $1. $2 draft beers, $1 sodas and half price nachos will be available from 6-8:00 p.m.
