HiToms Slip Past Copperheads

ASHEBORO, N.C. - The HiToms snapped a two-game road losing streak on Wednesday night as they defeated the Asheboro Copperheads 4-2 at McCrary Park to maintain their lead in the Coastal Plain League's West division.

The HiToms (14-8) were the first ones to score as the Copperheads aided the cause with two errors on one play. In the fourth inning, Jacob Fisher and Alex Williams singled to start the frame. One hitter later, Zack Briggs laid down a bunt, but the throw from Zach Benard (L 1-1) sailed down the right field line and allowed both runs to score and give the Tommies a 2-0 lead.

Asheboro (9-13) answered back in the fifth inning against Brian Holmes as John Findanza doubled to start the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Picchiotti to make it 2-1 HiToms after five.

In the sixth, the HiToms were able to add an insurance run as they played small ball to bring home the run. BrocK Hebert singled to start the inning and after being sacrificed to second, the speedster swiped third before scoring on a Fisher groundout to make it 3-1 Tommies.

Brian Holmes (W 5-1) was able to keep the Copperheads at bay as he worked six innings allowing just four hits and one run. Additionally, the left hander struck out five and walked just one.

After Fisher doubled off the wall in right to score Tanner Mathis, the HiToms had a 4-1 lead going to the last of the ninth.

Travis Tingle (S, 11) finished off his second inning of work and allowed a double to Ethan Bennett which scored a run, but he did give the visiting HiToms a 4-1 victory.

The Tommies are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Martinsville to battle the Copperheads with first pitch set for 7:05. They make their return to Finch Field on Friday night when they welcome the Martinsville Mustangs to town for at 7:00 first pitch.

The HiToms are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 900 alumni drafted and 45 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
