Forest City Owls News Release
MARTINSVILLE, VA. - The Martinsville Mustangs defeated the Forest City Owls, 3-1, in their final meeting of the season Wednesday night at Hooker Field. The Owls fall to 11-10 in the second half and 27-21 overall, while the Mustangs improve to 11-12 in the second half and 24-25 overall.
Forest City sent steady veteran Andrew Brown (Akron) to the mound. Brown worked seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits, while striking out eight batters and walking three. Martinsville called on Jake Lambert (Binghamton) to take the hill. Lambert tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and recording six strikeouts and two walks. Lambert earned his fifth victory of the year, while Brown took his second defeat of the summer.
The scoring began in the second inning, when Forest City's Dusty Quattlebaum (Gardner-Webb) drove Craig Manuel (Rice) home on a single to right field. Martinsville answered in the bottom of the frame on a wacky play that featured two Owls errors and allowed John Faircloth (Charleston Southern). The score was even 1-1 through five innings.
The Mustangs took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Mike Anderson (Wisconsin-Parkside) legged out an infield single, scoring Ian Harvey (Patrick Henry CC). Martinsville padded their lead in the bottom of the seventh when Harvey singled Justin Sizemore (Liberty) home. The scoreboard read 3-1 Mustangs after seven frames.
Harvey finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Martinsville, while Reed Harper (Austin Peay) was the only Owl to record a multi-hit game. The Owls committed four errors, their second-highest total of the season. This is the 16th time the Owls have committed more than one error in a game this season.
The Owls return to Forest City tomorrow night, when they will play a doubleheader against the Gastonia Grizzlies at McNair Field. The first game will begin at 6:00 PM, with the second game starting 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
