FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs used a five-run seventh inning to capture an 8-3 victory over the Morehead City Marlins on Wednesday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
Fayetteville (29-20, 12-9) sent eleven men to the plate in the inning, thanks to five walks issued by Marlins reliever Sam Lindquist. Brandon Napier had the big two-run single in the inning that broke the game open in his first game as a member of the SwampDogs.
Derek Brooks (7-1) took care of the rest, allowing just one run through seven innings to earn his league-leading seventh win of the season. He scattered seven hits, while walking just one and striking out four.
The win keeps Fayetteville in first place in both the CPL second half standings and the overall standings, as well as second overall in the CPL behind Edenton. Morehead City (11-11, 25-25) fell into a three-way tie with Wilmington and Florence for the final two playoff spots.
Duncan McGee (0-1) pitched well, despite being tagged with the loss. He allowed just three runs in six innings, surrendering six hits and walking four while recording one strike out in just his second start for the Marlins.
Joe Vaskas scored three times and reached base all five times he came to the plate, with a pair of walks, two singles, and a hit by pitch. Brian Yeung had an RBI groundout, and John Hogan delivered an RBI single in the decisive seventh inning.
Joe Sclafani smacked a two-run homerun off SwampDogs reliever Brandon Huffman in the top of the eighth inning to trim the SwampDogs margin of victory.
The SwampDogs head to Wilmington tomorrow night before hosting Morehead City in a rematch back at "The Swamp" on Friday. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
