Hitmen Open 2018 Training Camp with Fitness Testing

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club opened their 2018 Training Camp with veteran and rookie fitness testing today at the Scotiabank Saddledome. A total of 73 returning players and prospects were put through a series of tests conducted by Hitmen Strength and Conditioning Coach Sean Hope-Ross.

"As a group, there was noticeable improvement in all aspects including strength, anaerobic and aerobic fitness as well as power," said Hope-Ross. "It is clear sign they put in the work this summer."

The top three performers at main camp based on overall testing were Andrew Viggars, Tristen Nielsen and Dom Schmiemann. Shown below are the leaders in each category.

Main Camp Fitness Testing

Bench Press (135 lbs.): Tied for top spot were Tristen Nielsen and Luke Coleman (34 reps) followed by Mark Kastelic (32 reps) and Dom Schmiemann (31 reps)

Full Extension Chin-ups to Muscular Failure: Matthew Armitage (23 reps), Dom Schmiemann (22 reps) and a tie between Tristen Nielsen and Jake Kryski (21 reps)

Standing Long Jump: Andrew Viggars (292 cm), Luke Coleman (285 cm), Mark Kastelic (282 cm)

300 Yard Shuttle Run: Andrew Viggars (55.86 seconds), Dom Schmiemann (56.51 seconds) and a tie between Tristen Nielsen and Carson Focht (56.7 seconds)

Rookie Camp Fitness Testing

Bench Press (115 lbs.): Evan Toth (40 reps)

Full Extension Chin-ups to Muscular Failure: Syprus Ives (19 reps)

Standing Broad Jump: Sean Tschigerl (274 cm)

300 Yard Shuttle Run: Rylan Jockims (58.4 seconds)

Hitmen 2018 Training camp now moves to The Kyle Stuart Memorial Arena at Edge School (33055 Township Rd 250) for on-ice practices and games beginning tomorrow, Saturday, August 25 at 8:00 a.m.

On-ice practices and games will see rookies split onto Team Stone and Team Moran with veterans on Team Getzlaf and Team Ladd. There is also a Young Guns Game for the top 15,16 and 17-year-olds on Monday, August 27 at 1:00 p.m. The annual Calgary Hitmen intrasquad game acts as the conclusion of Training Camp on Tuesday, August 28 at 12:00 p.m.

All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public.

The Hitmen open the 2018 Western Hockey League pre-season at the Red Deer Tournament against the Kootenay ICE on Friday, August 31. The six-game schedule is highlighted by two local home games. The first is on Saturday, September 8 when the Hitmen meet the Edmonton Oil Kings in a 7:00 p.m. start at the Carstairs Memorial Arena. The second, the lone exhibition contest at the Scotiabank Saddledome, is Saturday, September 15 against Kootenay. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Look for ticket information for both games to be released later this week.

The 68-game regular season schedule begins on the road in Cranbrook against the Kootenay ICE on Saturday, September 22. The Hitmen home opening weekend begins on Saturday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Calgary returns to Scotiabank Saddledome ice the next day in a Sunday matinee, September 30, against the Red Deer Rebels. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

The 2018-19 Hitmen Hockey Pass is on sale now and includes 34 game tickets to be used anytime, in any combination. Pass holders also receive a $50 Scotiabank Saddledome gift card and a complimentary ticket to a select Flames, Roughnecks or Stampeders game. Passes start at less than $7 per ticket for kids and under $15 for adults.
