Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals have selected seven bookmark design winners from among more than 10,000 students who submitted artwork in the team's third annual "Hit the Books" program. As of today, 21,103 students at 64 elementary schools in the Omaha metro and surrounding area have signed up for this season's program, which is presented by the Nebraska College Savings Program and is designed to encourage students to read books.
The Royals selected bookmark design winners for each grade from 1st through 7th, with the grand prize-winning bookmark created by Nick Stroeher, a 4th-grader at Grace Abbott Elementary in Omaha. Every student participating in the program will receive the bookmark that Nick designed. They will each be required to read four books. The students have until April 17th to finish the reading program. They will then be able to bring their bookmarks to Rosenblatt Stadium to redeem them for two General Admission tickets to a Royals game of their choice from among four home dates in April and May.
This year's "Hit the Books" program features many other incentives. Nick Stroeher has won a prize package of Royals merchandise and souvenirs and will have the opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a game. Several schools that signed up earliest for the program, which got underway last November, have won the opportunity for their students to take part in on-field contests during the game they attend. And following the final "Hit the Books" game in May, a grand prize will be awarded to the school that had the highest percentage of bookmarks redeemed for Royals tickets.
This season's "Hit the Books" program, which already has about 5,000 more students and 21 more elementary schools signed up than last year's figures, is still open for more schools and kids to participate.
