St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Michael Katz delivered a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the 11th inning to help the St. Lucie Mets beat the Fort Myers Miracle 3-2 on Saturday at Tradition Field.
Miracle pitcher Luke Bard retired the first two batters of the 11th, but Wuilmer Becerra kept the inning alive with an infield single. Becerra then stole second. On Katz's base hit, Becerra slid head first into home plate to beat Austin Diemer's throw from left field.
With the win the Mets improved to 4-1 against the Miracle this season and they overtook Fort Myers for first place in the FSL South. The Mets are now half a game up going into Sunday's series finale.
Jimmy Duff pitched a scoreless top of the 11th to get his second win. He allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning but pitched out of trouble. Duff has now won both of the Mets extra inning games.
Mets starter Chris Flexen walked the first three batters of the game but only gave up a run-scoring single to Chris Paul. He got an infield fly and started an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play.
Katz hit a two-out double in the third and John Mora slugged a two-run homer off of Randy Rosario to put the Mets up 2-1. It was Mora's first home run of the year.
Chris Paul tied the game 2-2 in the third on a two-out RBI double.
The Mets bullpen - Kevin McGowan, Tim Peterson, Alberto Baldonado and Duff - combined for seven scoreless innings and nine strikeouts.
Kevin Taylor went 1 for 2 with two walks and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Next Up: The Mets (20-15, 1st) and Miracle (20-16, 2nd) conclude their three-game series on Sunday with another battle for first place. First pitch at Tradition Field is 1 p.m.
