Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - An early four-run deficit proved to be too much to handle for the Tampa Yankees (21-14) in a 5-2 loss to the Clearwater Threshers (23-12) on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Josh Rogers (L, 0-2) allowed all five Clearwater runs in the first two innings. The southpaw tossed five frames, surrendering nine hits and a walk in his third start with Tampa. Rogers tallied three strikeouts and threw 52 of his 79 pitches for strikes.
Carlos Tocci and Cody Asche hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the first. Andrw Pullin blooped a base hit to shallow center, scoring Tocci. Rogers hit Zach Green with a pitch, loading the bases. Asche then scored as Chace Numata reached on a fielder's choice, giving the Threshers a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees answered with a run in home half of the first. Jorge Mateo singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw to second by Numata. Abiatal Avelino followed with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to one.
Clearwater answered with the long ball in the second. Derek Campbell lined a leadoff, opposite field home run over the right field wall. One out later, Scott Kingery doubled into the right field corner. Later, Asche crushed a two-run home run into the Walgreen's Deck in right, giving the Threshers a four-run cushion.
Tampa added its second run in the sixth. Miguel Andujar and Bo Thompson each singled, placing runners on the corners. Andujar scored as Zack Zehner grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
LHP Elniery Garcia (W, 3-0) held the Yankees to two runs on five hits in six innings, walking two while tossing five strikeouts. RHP Ulises Joaquin retired all six batters he faced, striking out one in relief of Garcia. LHP Joely Rodriguez struck out two in the ninth, working around a hit to earn his third save.
LHP Travis Hissong struck out three in a pair of scoreless relief innings for Tampa. RHP Matt Marsh followed by working around a hit and a pair of walks, striking out one in two scoreless frames.
Mateo (1-for-3, BB, R, 2 SB) leads the team with 12 stolen bases. Avelino (1-for-4, RBI) recorded 12th RBI. Thompson (1-for-4) singled for his first High-A hit.
