Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - The heart and guts of the 2016 Stone Crabs were on full display on Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
In front of a pink-laden crowd on Breast Cancer Awareness Night, the Charlotte bats rapped out six runs in the first four innings, bouncing back from a doubleheader sweep to handily knock off the Jupiter Hammerheads by a score of 9-4.
The offense came early and often against rehabbing big leaguer Edwin Jackson (0-1). The 14-year Major League veteran ran into trouble immediately, allowing a base hit to Alec Sole and a double into the left-field corner to Grant Kay to put runners on second and third with one out. Jackson fanned Nick Ciuffo, but Cade Gotta strode up and planted a hanger into left field for a two-run single, giving the Crabs an early 2-0 edge.
The Stone Crabs scored again off Jackson in the second. Cristian Toribio doubled on one hop to the wall to lead off the frame, and Thomas Milone followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners with no out. Landon Cray's grounder to the right side scored Toribio to give Charlotte a 3-0 lead.
The game truly broke open in the fourth. Jeff Brigham relieved Jackson, who reached his pitch count, and promptly found himself in trouble, walking Toribio and allowing a base hit to Cray to put two on with two out. Riley Unroe, wielding a special pink bat, continued his recent roll with a fiery triple to the wall in right-center, scoring both Toribio and Cray. Sole followed with his second hit of the game to make it 6-1. The Hammerheads never threatened again, scoring most of their total in garbage time at the end of the game.
Yonny Chirinos (3-0) started for the Stone Crabs and was absolutely terrific, limiting the Hammerheads to one unearned run on just two hits and a walk in six innings. Chirinos, starting his first game for Charlotte after three weeks of stretching out at Bowling Green, needed just 70 pitches to make it through his six frames.
The Stone Crabs look for a series split on Sunday afternoon at Charlotte Sports Park. RHP Hunter Wood (2-2, 1.71) comes in off a one-hitter in his last start, facing Hammerheads LHP Dillon Peters (3-2, 2.93). First pitch is scheduled for 12:35. It's Super Sunday, meaning all kids ages 13 and under get in FREE! For tickets, head to the FCB Box Office before the game or visit stonecrabsbaseball.com.
