Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - There is a new man at the top of the Fighting Saints' Tier I scoring leaderboard. Stephen Halliday's goal 1:22 into the game set the new mark and began a scoring deluge as the Dubuque Fighting Saints defeated the Madison Capitols 6-2 on Thursday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. The win puts the Fighting Saints at the top of the Eastern Conference.
The Fighting Saints scored three goals on the game's first four shots on net and chased Madison starter Mason Kucenski from the net in favor of Simon Latkoczy.
Halliday scored point 145 in his Fighting Saints career, his 22nd goal of the season, which was a point that passed Shane Sooth on the all-time list. Connor Kurth kept the puck in at the blue line and passed it off to Halliday at the side of the net and made no mistake on the first shot on goal of the game.
The pressure never relented.
Axel Kumlin snuck a shot through to the net with a screen in front to continue the avalanche of scoring. The reigning USHL Forward of the Week Max Montes and Nikita Borodayenko picked up the assists. The goal came just 42 seconds after Halliday's opening goal.
Halliday took no time to tack on to his historic night. Kurth found Halliday once again at the side of a vacant net to post his second of the night.
The Fighting Saints continued the scoring party in the second period as Dubuque added three more goals in the middle frame.
Just eight seconds into the Saints' second power play of the night with Conner Schneider in the box, they converted. Ryan Beck and Kurth completed a triangle passing play to Borodayenko sitting in the slot to make it 4-0 Dubuque. Kurth added his third assist of the night.
While Madison struck in the second period, Dubuque responded with two more. Kenny Connors' power play goal at 12:17 and Shawn O'Donnell's breakaway goal sandwiched the tally from Jake Dunlap to give the Fighting Saints a 6-1 lead after two periods of play. Luke Mittelstadt added a power play goal in the third period to cap the Caps' scoring.
Since getting the win at the BioSteel All-American Game, Paxton Geisel has won five consecutive starts. In those five starts, he has posted save percentages north of .900, and a .950 save percentage overall in those five games. Geisel's 17 wins now tie him with Simon Latkoczy for the second most in the USHL.
The Fighting Saints remain home to continue the three-in-three weekend to take on Team USA's National Team Development Program on Friday, February 18. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
