
Jacks Fall to Youngstown 7-5 in Game One of Weekend Series

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Muskegon Lumberjacks fell to the Youngstown Phantoms by a final score of 7-to-5 on Friday, Feb. 18 from the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio. Lumberjacks forward Joey Larson potted a pair of goals with other Muskegon tallies coming from Quinn Hutson, Jack Williams, and Jake Richard. With the loss, the Lumberjacks fall to 23-12-3-3 with 52 standings points, good for third place in the Eastern Conference.
1st Period
Sixty seconds into the opening period, Joey Larson scores the first goal of the game for the Lumberjacks to make it a 1-to-0 game. Larson's 21st goal of the season was assisted by Phil Tresca and Jacob Guevin.
Youngstown responded with a goal from Grant Porter at 10:36 to tie the game 1-to-1. Porter's third goal of the year was assisted by Tomas Machu.
At 18:13, Youngstown's Justin Varner gave the Phantoms the 2-to-1 lead with his third goal of the season. Varner's tally was assisted by Shane LaChance.
With under a minute left in the first period, Muskegon's Quinn Hutson tied the game 2-to-2 at 19:09 of the period. Hutson's 23rd goal of the year went unassisted.
After 20 minutes of action, both teams skated to a 2-to-2 tie heading into the dressing room.
2nd Period
The Phantoms would pull ahead just 78 seconds into the second period with a goal from Winter Wallace to make it a 3-to-2 game. Wallace's 10th goal of the season was unassisted.
At 5:17, Grant Porter notched his second goal of the game to make it a 4-to-2 lead for Youngstown. Porter's fourth of the year was assisted by Just Varner to double the Phantom lead.
Just over a minute later, Muskegon's Joey Larson scored his second goal of the game to put the Lumberjacks within one goal. Larson's 22nd of the season was unassisted to make it a 4-to-3 game, still in favor of Youngstown.
With under two minutes left in the middle stanza, Lumberjacks captain Jack Williams picked up his 11th goal of the season to level the score 4-to-4. Noah Ellis picked up the lone assist at 18:24 of the period.
With only 33 seconds left in the second period, Winter Wallace lit the lamp for the second time in the game, giving the Phantoms the 5-to-4 lead at 19:27. Trey Taylor and Adam Ingram picked up assists on the power play goal from Wallace, his 11th of the season.
After two periods of action in Youngstown, the Phantoms controlled a 5-to-4 advantage heading into the final period of regulation.
3rd Period
At 1:18 of the third period, Jake Richard scores the equalizer for Muskegon to tie the game 5-to-5. Quinn Hutson and Nathan McBrayer scooped up assists on Richard's 10th goal of the season.
With just over two minutes left in regulation, Kyle Bettens scored what would eventually turn out to be the game-winning goal to make it a 6-to-5 lead for Youngstown at 18:47 of the third period. Jaden Grant scored the lone assist on Bettens's 12th goal of the season.
Shane LaChance would score the empty-net goal to pad the Youngstown lead to 7-to-5 at 19:07 of the period. LaChance's fifth goal of the season went unassisted.
In the end, the Lumberjacks could not come back as the Youngstown Phantoms skated to a 7-to-5 victory on home ice for game one of the weekend series.
On Deck
The Lumberjacks will return to the Covelli Centre for game two of the weekend series against the Youngstown Phantoms on Saturday, Feb. 19. Puck drop is slated for a 7:05 pm EST start from Youngstown, Ohio.
