Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The goal horn at Young Arena broke on Friday, and although it wasn't an overabundance of scoring that pushed it past its limit, the Waterloo Black Hawks were prolific enough to top the Sioux Falls Stampede 5-2.
As the teams returned from the from the second intermission, a blast from the goal horn continued to sound far longer than normal, eventually petering out before the system gave way.
Before that happened, the Black Hawks had kept the horn operator busy in the early going, surging to the lead with three goals in the first eight minutes. Jake Schneider opened the scoring at 4:56, slipping a low shot past Isak Posch after Tyler Procious and Jake Rozzi had forced a turnover inside the Stampede blue line.
Waterloo's next two goals were separated by 49 seconds. At 7:10, Jacob Jeannette drew a lot of attention as he came into the Stampede zone on right wing. That left Connor Brown alone in the high slot, and when Jeannette delivered a pass, Brown picked the top corner over Posch's left shoulder. The Hawks third goal came as the result of scramble just outside the crease; Garrett Schifsky knocked in the loose disc.
The Stampede drew back within two thanks to a power play conversion at 17:16, when Daniel Russell flicked a pass to Max Rud near the top of the left circle. Rud used traffic to beat a screened Emmett Croteau inside the opposite post.
Each team had seven shots in a scoreless second, which included an exchange of special teams chances. Power play opportunities continued to accumulate in the third, but the 3-1 score held until 2:59 remained. Skating five-on-five, Sioux Falls' Ryan Healey fed a pass to the top of the crease, where it was lifted in by Sam Harris.
Rud was called for hooking on the next shift, and the Hawks capitalized almost immediately on the ensuing advantage. Brown won control of the faceoff to begin Waterloo's sixth power play, and Ben Robertson fired from the left point. Stationed at the front of the net, Jeannette redirected the chance at 17:40 for the only goal against Noah Grannan, who had come on in relief of Posch.
With Grannan called to the bench after play resumed, Gavin O'Connell hit the open net from his own blue line at 17:59.
Croteau earned the victory with 27 saves. After making his debut against the Stampede during the 2020/21 season, Friday's win was his fifth in five head-to-head starts versus Sioux Falls.
The Hawks' weekend continues on Saturday night at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena for a 7:05 p.m. game against the RoughRiders. Waterloo returns to home ice next Friday versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
