Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors geared up for a fresh start on home ice this evening and made history in the process, securing their first win in their new home. It was a 5-4 shootout victory over the visiting Windsor Spitfires, shifting their record to 1-2-1-0 on the year.

The 1st period started off slowly, with the first goal coming off the stick of Windsor's Greg Nemisz at 17:25, on the power-play.

However, things picked up quickly in the middle frame. Windsor's Ryan Ellis scored at 3:46 to make it 2-0. Zac Rinaldo collected his first career goal for the Majors at 6:38, with support from Matt Piva and Mike Pelech, to cut the lead in half.

The flip-flop continued as Joshua Bailey put the Spitfires back ahead by a pair at 11:54. However, Piva fired a shot home at 13:01 to make it 3-2. This time, the assists were credited to Tyler Allen and Tim Billingsley. Unfortunately, Taylor Hall scored at 19:35 to make it 4-2 for the visitors.

In the 3rd period, things took a positive turn for the Majors as newly-acquired Kris Sparre connected at 14:44, off of Matt Russo and Kaspars Daugavins passes, to make it 4-3. Then, with only 45 seconds left to play, Mike Pelech whacked home the tying goal, after accepting Daugavins and Casey Cizikas passes, to send the contest into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime session, Piva and Matt Caria secured the win for the Majors with shootout goals.

The game's three stars were Piva (1st), Caria (2nd) and Pelech (3rd). Majors goaltender Chris Carrozzi and Windsor's netminder Andrew Engelage each made 34 saves. The Majors were 0 for 10 on the power-play while the Spitfires were 2 for 6.

The Majors participate in their second of six consecutive home games on Sunday afternoon (October 7) when they welcome the Kingston Frontenacs at 2 p.m. The first 5,000 fans will receive a special edition Majors magnet schedule and the new Majors KidsZone will be officially opened to the public.
