Hillman Shines as Scrappers Top Yankees

(Staten Island, NY)-Juan Hillman continued his brilliant start to the season as he earned his second win of the season while tossing 5.2 shutout innings on Sunday afternoon. The Mahoning Valley Scrappers rode a five run first inning to win series finale against the Staten Island Yankees, 6-4.

The Scrappers got all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning. Gabriel Mejia and Silento Sayles started the game with back to back singles. With one out Erlin Cerda got the Scrappers on the board with an RBI single to score Mejia. With two outs, Nate Winfrey would add to the lead with a two run single to score both Sayles and Cerda. Following a Gavin Collins single, a Yankees error would allow Winfrey to score to push the lead out to 4-0. Alexis Pantoja would cap off the first inning with an RBI single to drive in Collins to push the Scrappers lead to 5-0.

Hillman wouldn't need any more runs as he was almost unhittable. He would face just one over the minimum for the first three innings. In the fourth inning the Yankees would get back to back singles to start the inning but Hillman would strand the runners on base to keep the 5-0 lead.

In the top of the eighth inning the Scrappers would add an insurance run. With one out Gian Paul Gonzalez would single, becoming the ninth Scrappers starter to record a base hit. With two outs he would come around to score on a Sayles RBI single for a 6-0 lead.

Staten Island would score a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Dace Kime, on in relief, would hit Nick Solak to start the inning. Kane Sweeney followed with a walk before Drew Bridges delivered an RBI double to score Solak to cut the Scrappers lead to 6-1.

The Yankees would make a run at the lead in the bottom of the ninth inning of Ping-Hsueh Chen. With two outs Chen hit Solak and allowed a single to Sweeney. Brides would follow with a three run homerun to cut the Scrappers lead to 6-4. Following a walk to Timmy Robinson, Ryan Perez would come out of the bullpen to record the final out of the game.

Hillman (2-0) earned the win in 5.2 innings. He allowed no runs on four hits. Hillman walked one and struck out four. Henry Martinez would get the final out of the sixth inning on one pitch. Kime then went 2.0 innings allowing one run, earned, on two hits. He walked three and struck out two. Chen would go 0.2 of an inning allowing three earned runs on two hits. He walked one. Perez (1) earned his and the team's first save of the season with a strikeout to end the game.

The Scrappers (6-17) now return to Eastwood Field to start a three game series with the Tri-City ValleyCats on Monday night. Luis Jimenez will get the start for the Scrappers. Michael Brantley will also be in the lineup on a rehab assignment for the Cleveland Indians. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
