Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Down five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Lake Monsters rallied to score four runs and had the potential winning run on second base, but the Batavia Muckdogs were able to survive the rally for a 6-5 victory over Vermont in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters were held to just one run on three hits over the first eight innings, including two hits in the first as Vermont tied the game 1-1 on a Nate Mondou RBI single after a Steven Pallares RBI single. But trailing 6-1 to start the ninth, Vermont began to rally with one out in the ninth when Brett Sunde singled, Tyler Ramirez walked and Migeul Guzman scored Sunde with a groundball double down the left field line.

A wild pitch plated the Lake Monsters second run of the inning before James Terrell cut the deficit to 6-4 with an RBI single to center. Pallares followed with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before moving to third on a Mondou RBI single that scored Terrell to get Vermont within a run at 6-5. But Muckdogs reliever Ty Provencher got Luke Persico to groundout, then with the tying run on third and winning run on second got Jhonny Rodriguez to flyout to left to end the game.

Batavia had built the 6-1 lead when they scored three runs in the third without the benefit of a hit, using a walk and three Vermont errors in the inning to score three times. The Muckdogs added two more runs in the seventh with doubles from Javier Lopez and Aaron Knapp that were followed by a Eric Gutierrez sacrifice fly.

Mondou was 2-for-5 with the pair of RBI singles, giving him five hits and five RBI in the last two games, while Pallares was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Dakota Chalmers (3-1) came on in relief to start the third and took the loss, despite allowing no hits over four innings of work as he was charged with the three runs in the third (only one earned).

Knapp was 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and four stolen bases for Batavia (6-17), while starter Reilly Hovis (2-2) allowed one run on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over five innings to pick up the win.

The loss snapped a five-game home winning streak for Vermont (12-11), which now heads out to Auburn for a three-game series against the Doubledays starting on Monday. The Lake Monsters return home to Centennial Field for a three-game series against the Williamsport Crosscutters Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
