Auburn Doubledays News Release

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost their third game in a row for the first time all season. Oliver Ortiz picked up three hits and knocked in a run for the Doubledays in the loss.

State College (17-6) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Tommy Edman led off with a single. Edman advanced to second base on a Jose Martinez ground out and then moved to third base on a Vince Jackson ground out. Ryan McCarvel then hit an infield single to score Edman and give the Spikes a 1-0 lead. Dylan Tice followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Ricardo Bautista then doubled to left field, scoring McCarvel and Jackson for a 3-0 State College advantage.

Auburn (12-11) scored in the top of the second inning. Nick Banks led off the inning with a walk. Tres Barrera then struck out, but on the third strike, Banks stole second base. After a Ryan Ripken pop out, Oliver Ortiz doubled down the right-field line to score Banks and cut State College's lead to two, 3-1.

The Doubledays tied the game in the third inning. Blake Perkins singled to lead off the inning. With Daniel Johnson batting, Perkins stole second base. Perkins then advanced to third on a Johnson ground out to first base. Sheldon Neuse followed with a double that scored Perkins to trim the deficit to one, 3-2. Banks then singled to right field, which allowed Neuse to score and tie the game at three.

The Spikes responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning with one swing of the bat. With one out, a pitch hit McCarvel. Tice followed with a two-run home run to right-center field, giving State College a 5-3 lead.

State College added five runs in the eighth inning. Nine batters came to the plate for the Spikes who only had two hits in the inning. Three batters were walked and one reached on an error. None of the five runs that scored were earned. State College led 10-3 after the eighth inning, which is what the final score would be.

The Doubledays return home to Falcon Park to begin a three-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters on Monday. Right-hander Ryan Simonds will make his first start for Auburn, while right-hander Xavier Altamirano will pitch for Vermont. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. General Admission tickets are one dollar as part of "Fan Fare Monday" at Falcon Park.
