Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg shut out Salem 3-0 in a battle of Carolina League division leaders at City Stadium Tuesday night. The Hillcats and Red Sox will face off in game two of a three-game series at City Stadium on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
Miles Durham broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run -his fifth homer of the season - leading off the bottom of the second.
Lynchburg extended its lead in the third. After Salem starter Seth Garrison walked Alex Presley to lead off the frame, Jose De Los Santos successfully executed a bunt single to put runners at first and second with no outs. Jordy Mercer followed with a sacrifice bunt that advanced the runners and Pedro Alvarez connected for a single down the right field line that drove in both runners and gave the Hillcats a 3-0 edge.
Three runs was all that was needed for the Hillcats as Chi-Hung Cheng and a pair of Lynchburg relievers, Dustin Molleken and R. J. Rodriguez, combined to shut out the Red Sox. Cheng (4-2) allowed four hits in five innings and struck out four en route to picking up his fourth win of the season for Lynchburg. Garrison (2-5) took the loss for Salem. Molleken was credited with his second hold of the season and Rodriguez earned his ninth save by setting the Red Sox down in order in the final frame.
With the win, Lynchburg improved to 28-16, a season-best 12 games above .500, and stayed in first place in the Carolina League's Northern Division. The Hillcats are now two games ahead of second-place Potomac, whose game with Kinston was postponed. Salem fell to 22-23 and maintains first place in the Carolina League's Southern Division with a half-game lead over second-place Winston-Salem.
Game two of the Hillcats-Red Sox series is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start at City Stadium Wednesday.
