WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, was famous for his use of the phrase "Let's play two" which epitomized his passion for the game as much as the beauty of the sport, but even Ernie might be caught off-guard when he hears what the Potomac Nationals and Kinston Indians have planned for Wednesday, May 27.

Due to unpredictably inclement weather and a schedule that does not call for another meeting between the two teams in the first half, the P-Nats and K-Tribe will take part in a tripleheader from Pfitzner Stadium with the first game scheduled to begin at 2:00 ET.

Tuesday's planned doubleheader was once again called off due to a soggy field and an ominous forecast, which once again forced the hand of the umpires to make a difficult decision.

The initial tilt will be the completion of the suspended game from Memorial Day, which had to be cut short due to a sudden spring storm in the top of the second inning. The K-Tribe had runners on first and second with one out in a scoreless tie. Since the game is still to be continued, it will go a full nine innings.

The other two games will be of the seven-inning variety.

Though this will be a first in the 25-year history of Pfitzner Stadium, tripleheaders have occurred in the past. The first triple dip in Carolina League history took place on August 1, 1996 at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Md. A similar situation took place as the first game between the Keys and the Salem Avalanche was suspended because of rain. The next night's game was also called due to inclement weather, so when the skies finally cleared on the morning of August 1, the two teams took to battle with Frederick taking two of three from the Avs.

The last Major League tripleheader took place in the waning years of Woodrow Wilson's presidency all the way back on October 2, 1920 as the Reds and Pirates dueled late into the night as Cincinnati took two of three from Pittsburgh.

In case you were wondering, a gallon of gas in 1920 cost just $0.18; the price of a new Chevy half-ton pickup was only $650, and a used Ford was listed at the low-low price of $57.50.

It will be a struggle for both teams to juggle their pitching staffs, and an all-hands-on-deck mentality is sure to be prevalent on an historic day at Pfitzner Stadium.

As it is with any rainout at the Pfitz, fans that were holding tickets for the game on May 25 and 26 can be exchanged for a future game during the 2009 season, except July 4th, based on availability. Please contact the Potomac Nationals Ticket Office during regular business hours to make arrangements to exchange your tickets.
