Marrero Named Player of the Week

Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Throughout 2009, the P-Nats have kept pace with the scorching Lynchburg Hillcats by virtue of their starting rotation, which boasts a 3.64 earned run average and the top two pitchers in the Carolina League in Brad Meyers and Jeff Mandel. Meyers and lefty Tom Milone have each earned Pitcher of the Week honors in the month of May.
To this point, the offense might feel a bit left out with all the accolades bestowed upon the starting staff, but now the batters are on the board as top prospect Chris Marrero was named Carolina League Player of the Week for the week of May 18-24 to become the third P-Nat this month to take home such an award.
Marrero did his damage against the Kinston Indians in a four-game set at Grainger Stadium where he feasted on K-Tribe pitching to the tune of a .500 average with a home run and six RBI. He slugged the go-ahead grand slam in Tuesday's 4-3 victory and supplied the only Nationals offense the following night with a two-out, two-run single to tie the game at two in the eighth inning. Just for good measure, he also swiped his second base of 2009.
His bat stayed hot as the team headed back home to face the first-place Hillcats as he launched another longball on Friday night, collecting five total RBI in the series.
Overall, Marrero hit .429 in those seven games with two home runs, 11 RBI and notched four multi-hit games. As of May 26, the Miami native is sitting on an eight-game hitting streak, the longest for Potomac this season.
On the season, Marrero is hitting .304 with six home runs and 28 RBI while crushing lefties to the tune of a .439 average and an outstanding OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) of 1.194.
The P-Nats welcome the K-Tribe to the Pfitz for the first time this year, sure to be music to Marrero's ears, before heading back on the road Friday for another rumble with Lynchburg.
