Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Kinston, N.C. - For the second night in a row, the Lynchburg Hillcats put together a five run frame, tonight in the second, as they go on to top the Woodies, 7-4, and take a two games to none lead in the series.
Down East (13-7), will drop their first series of the season, as they were unable to hold a 1-0 lead for the second straight night.
The Wood Ducks got on the board in the bottom of the first. Yonny Hernandez and Leody Taveras led off with back-to-back singles, and later in the inning, Tyreque Reed lifted a sac fly to right field to put the Woodies on top, 1-0.
In the second, the Hillcats sent eight men to the plate, scoring five times. Jodd Carter doubled with one out, and Sicnarf Loopstok walked, followed by an Austen Wade single to load the bases. Luke Wakamatsu then drew a walk to force in a run, and Steve Kwan followed with a bases clearing triple. That ended the night for Wood Ducks starter Jake Latz (loss, 0-1). Sal Mendez then took over and gave up a sac fly to Dillon Persinger to cap the scoring in the frame.
Latz lasted just 1.1 innings, giving up five runs on three hits, he walked one and struck out two.
Carter then blasted a solo homer in the third inning, his second in the series, to push the lead out to 6-1 in favor of the Hillcats (12-8).
The Wood Ducks did trim the deficit in the middle innings. Diosbel Arias singled home Hernandez in the third. Then in the fourth, Ryan Dorow reached on an error, and Yanio Perez followed with a double. They would both come into score on a RBI groundout and a wild pitch respectively. Perez had two doubles on the night.
That was close as the Woodies would get as they were held in check the rest of the way. Felix Tati (win, 1-1) came out of the bullpen to work 2.1 scoreless to earn his first win of the season for the Hillcats, while Jared Robinson (save, 3) delivered 2.1 scoreless innings to lock down the save. Lynchburg would also add an insurance run in the ninth when Wade walked with one out, and came into score on a double from Kwan two batters later. Wade reached base in all four plate appearances in the game.
The two teams close out the three game series Thursday night, when righty Justin Garza (1-3, 7.64) takes the mound for Lynchburg. The Woodies have yet to name a starter for the game. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and the broadcast is available beginning at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
