York Revolution News Release
Shawn Hill was brilliant in his first start of the season, but two big innings by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs handed the York Revolution a 9-3 loss on Thursday night, as the Revs suffered a series sweep at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, MD. The Revs will look to bounce back as they travel to Lancaster on Friday night to open the first "War of the Roses" series of the 2012 season.
Hill allowed just one hit and one walk in four scoreless innings of work, throwing 38 of 57 pitches for strikes, including first pitch strikes to ten of the 13 batters he faced.
The Blue Crabs erupted for a five-run fifth inning against reliever Jesus Sanchez (1-2), scoring all five runs with two outs. Chin-Lung Hu rapped a two-run ground-rule double to left-center to plate the game's first runs, before David Espinosa followed with a two-run single to right. Brian Barton capped the rally with an RBI double to deep center.
Southern Maryland enjoyed another big outburst in the seventh, scoring four more times to put the game out of reach. Hu led off the inning with his first homer of the season, and the Crabs would also receive an RBI single from Richard Mercado and a two-run knock by Matt Padgett.
York 's offense set a season-high in extra-base hits (seven) and doubles (five), but missed opportunities overrode those numbers, as York stranded 11 men on-base for the night, including eight in scoring position.
The Revs left runners in scoring position in each of the first six innings, going 0-for-8 in such situations before James Shanks homered to left following an Andres Perez triple in the sixth to get York on the board.
Michael Hernandez collected York's only other hit with a runner in scoring position, on an RBI double in the ninth inning. York was 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position for the game.
Blue Crabs starter Matthew Vasquez (2-1) lasted eight innings for the second time in his last three starts, allowing just two runs to earn the win despite giving up 10 hits.
