It fit the situation perfectly.

John Halama fired a complete game eight-hitter Thursday morning, leading the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 5-2 win over the Camden Riversharks. The victory was the 1,500th in Butch Hobson's managerial career.

Twenty-three of those games have been won by the 40-year old left-hander.

"I had this thought that John would be on the mound when it happened," said Hobson.

Halama (3-1) walked one and struck out seven. Both runs he allowed were unearned as the result of three Lancaster errors in the fifth inning.

Lancaster jumped ahead, 2-0, in the top of the second. Ryan Harvey opened the inning with a single lined into right center. One out later, Brad Boyer, given the green light on a 3-0 count, hammered a long triple to right center. Boyer jogged home on Jaime Pedroza's single into right.

After missing on a first-and-third, none-out opportunity in the third, the Barnstormers stretched the lead in the fourth. Both Blake Gailen and Boyer walked. Pedroza singled to right to load the bases, and Francisco Hernandez drove one home with a sacrifice fly to left center. Boyer and Pedroza both moved up as well, and Boyer scored when Adam Godwin singled through the drawn-in infield.

The bottom of the fifth was messy, but Halama remained unfazed. Steve Doetsch led off with a ground single up the middle, and Paddy Matera beat out a bunt. Terry Tiffee's throw was wild on the bunt, giving each runner an extra base. Halama retired Scott Knazek on a shallow fly to left for the first out. Doetsch scored when Chris Walker hit a high chopper to Boyer, and Walker reached when the ball was bobbled by the Lancaster second baseman. Walker took off stealing, and Hernandez throw got away from Boyer, allowing Matera to score the second run. Halama cut off the rally at that point, striking out Lloyd Turner and inducing a bounder back to the mound by Drew Macias.

Camden threatened again in the seventh, putting runners at first and second with one out, but Halama got Turner to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.

Lancaster tacked on its final run in the eighth on a double by Harvey, a wild pitch, and Boyer's third hit of the day.

Knazek grounded into a force play to end the game, with Halama throwing over 100 pitches. Tim Hamulack was loosely getting ready, but this day was not to end any other way.

The Barnstormers return home to face the division rival York Revolution on Friday evening at 7:00 in the first game of the 2012 Carmax War of the Roses. Lancaster won last year's series, 10-8. J.D. Durbin (1-1) will take the hill for Lancaster while Corey Thurman will counter for the Revolution. The game will be aired on WLAN, 1390-AM and on 1390wlan.com, starting at 6:45.
