Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio- The Dayton Dragons are hosting high school baseball at Fifth Third Field for the 11th straight season in 2016. The final night of games for this year, Friday, May 6, will consist of a Greater Western Ohio Conference match-up and a non-conference showdown between two successful schools. This spring, 32 high schools will have played regular season games at the home of the Dragons.
High school baseball at Fifth Third Field also serves as a fundraiser for those participating. This year's series of games will raise approximately $30,000 for the schools to help with the cost of uniforms, equipment, and bus transportation.
All games are sponsored by MAC Athletics, Inc., experts in athletic facility planning, design, construction, and equipment acquisition. Go to macathletix.com for more information on their services.
The GWOC contest will occur in the first game at 4:30 PM when Greenville meets Northmont. Greenville enters play with a 5-4 conference record, placing them third in the North Division race. The Green Wave are led offensively by Logan Eldridge and his .394 batting average. The junior also has a team-high 17 RBI with the same number of runs scored. On the mound, Kyle Mills owns a 3-1 record with a 1.56 ERA over five appearances.
In the other dugout will be Northmont, a team that is in fourth place in the Central Division at 3-7. The Thunderbolts have an overall record of 11-10. Tyler Liddy is hitting at a .396 clip with four doubles, a triple, and ten RBI. His teammate Tanner Lee leads the squad with 14 runs scored and nine stolen bases. Jacob Monnin, who is heading to Tiffin College, has pitched in ten games for Northmont and has a solid 2.19 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 38.1 innings.
Game two will begin at approximately 7:00 PM and features Covington taking on St. Henry. Covington has already played at Fifth Third Field this spring back on April 21 when they took down Cross County Conference rival Newton. The Buccaneers have improved their record to 10-7 on the year since that game. Covington returned three postseason all-conference selections including second teamers James Grilliot and Levi Winn from last year's club.
St. Henry has already defeated Covington once this season by a 4-1 score in late March. The Redskins, currently 12-5 overall and tied for the Midwest Athletic Conference lead at 6-1, are ranked 14th in Division 4 in the latest OHSBCA poll. Two pitchers on the roster that will continue playing baseball at the next level are Josh Osterholt who will head to the University of Northwest Ohio and Sinclair Community College recruit Mitch Stammen.
The Dayton Dragons have been hosting the Miami Valley's best baseball teams since 2006 and are proud to continue the tradition for an 11th year. A complete list of high school baseball games scheduled to be played at Fifth Third Field can be found below.
All games are free to attend and the media are invited to cover them. Gates will open 30 minutes prior to the first game played that day. High schools may provide their own PA announcers, broadcasters, cheer squads, and national anthem singers. Participating schools sell Dragons tickets to help raise money for their programs.
