FREDERICK, Md. -On Monday, David Hess was named the Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week" for August 24-30. It marks the second week in-a-row a member of the Keys pitching staff has taken home a weekly honor, while it is also the second time Hess, 22, has been recognized this year. In addition to Hess, Mikey O'Brien (August 17-23) and Ariel Miranda (July 13-20) have received pitcher of the week recognition and Drew Dosch was named the CL player of the week for April 20-27.
Facing Potomac last Tuesday, Hess tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout. Pitching the front-end of a doubleheader, the right-hander allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out five en route to his ninth win of the season. It was the first complete game shutout of Hess' career, and the third by a Frederick pitcher in 2015.
The victory capped off an outstanding month of August for Hess. In five starts, he went 4-0 with a 0.99 ERA. In 27.1 innings, Hess allowed only three runs on 18 hits and held opponents to a .186 average. During that time, he trimmed his ERA from 4.25 to 3.58 while he did not allow a run in his last 11.1 innings. Only Lynchburg's Michael Peoples (0.87) posted a lower ERA among Carolina League starters in August.
This season with the Keys, Hess is 9-4 with a 3.58 ERA over 26 games (25 starts). Logging 133.1 innings, the right-hander has allowed 53 runs on 112 hits to go with 53 walks and 110 strikeouts. Opponents are batting .224 against him. Entering Monday, Hess ranked second in the league in batting average against and games started, fourth in strikeouts, fifth in innings pitched and tied for fifth in wins. His ERA was ninth-best in the CL.
Entering the season ranked as the No. 20 prospect in the Orioles system according to Baseball America, Hess was selected by the Orioles in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Tennessee Tech. There, he became the highest-drafted Golden Eagles player since 1969 when he was taken with the 151st overall selection.
