Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AUGUST 31, 2015) -- On Monday, the Chicago Cubs activated Pelicans right-handed pitcher James Pugliese from the 7-day disabled and promoted him to Double-A Tennessee. There is no corresponding move at this time.
Pugliese, 23, has made 30 appearances this year with the Pelicans, all from the bullpen, and the fourth-most on the team. In those outings, the six-foot, three-inch hurler has compiled a 2.62 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. In 55.0 innings of work this year, he has struck out 49 and walked just 13 while also not having allowed a home run. His 49 strikeouts are the most among any full-time reliever this year. He has converted fives saves in seven opportunities as well as posting a 4-2 record this year.
Among his peers in the Carolina League, Pugliese carries the fifth-best strikeout per nine innings ratio in the circuit (8.02), has allowed the second-fewest walks per nine (2.13), and has surrendered the fourth-lowest baseunners allowed per nine innings ratio (11.13).
Pugliese was placed on the 7-day disabled list on July 30 and missed 27 games with the club.
A native of Trenton, New Jersey, the Cubs selected Pugliese in the 18th round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Mercer Country Community College.
With the move, the Pelicans' roster is now at 25 active players, the Carolina League limit, and includes five players on the disabled list.
Pugliese joins a list of 14 other players to earn promotions from Myrtle Beach this year. Starling Peralta, Matt Brazis, Jacob Hannemann, Gerardo Concepcion, Wes Darvill, Billy McKinney, Tayler Scott, Zach Cates, Cael Brockmeyer, Jeimer Candelario, Juan Paniagua, Jacob Rogers, and Fernando Cruz have all been promoted to Tennessee this season, and Michael Heesch is the only Pelicans player to skip Double-A and make a stop in Triple-A Iowa. Brockmeyer, Heesch, and Rogers have both returned and are on the active roster.
The Pelicans will begin an eight-game, two-city road trip beginning Tuesday with a three-game series at the Potomac Nationals before moving on to play Wilmington for five games in four days.
Tuesdays game can be heard live on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. ET.
