Hershey Bears News Release
The Hershey Bears Hockey Club picked up all four points in their two- game weekend, and vaulted into the East Division lead and into third place in the Eastern Conference.
Hershey hosted the Albany Devils on Saturday, and at the end of a back- and-forth affair marred by 113 penalty minutes and 12 power plays, the Bears came out on top of a 5-4 overtime decision. The teams would combine for five goals in the opening period, starting with Casey Wellman's goal just 10 seconds into the game. Tomas Kundratek's first of the season made it 2-0, but the Devils bounced back on goals from Stefan Matteau and Reece Scarlett to tie the game. Stanislav Galiev made it 3-2 in favor of the hosts with a late-period tally. In the second, Darcy Zajac and Reid Boucher scored power-play goals around Chris Conner's seventh of the season, and the contest would go to the third tied 4-4. The Devils also killed off a five-minute major penalty assessed to defenseman Dan Kelly to stay very much alive. Neither team found the back of the net in the third, nor in the four-on-four overtime session. Devils captain Rod Pelley would be flagged for slashing during the three-on-three, and with Hershey on the power play, Galiev one-timed a shot past Scott Wedgewood at 3:46, completing a three-point night and helping his team to victory. Philipp Grubauer returned from a four-game injury absence and made 25 saves, to pick up his 12th win of the season.
On Sunday, Dane Byers scored a pair of goals and Pheonix Copley made 28 saves to help the Bears cruise to a 5-2 win over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Tim Kennedy beat goaltender Anthony Stolarz on a breakaway to open the scoring, but former Bears forward Andrew Gordon capitalized on a turnover to knot the score. Byers and Conner would give Hershey a 3-1 lead to take to the intermission. Oliver Lauridsen later pulled the Phantoms within one goal with the only strike of the second period. The Phantoms hung around in the game until Dustin Gazley stole the puck behind the Phantoms net and fed Byers for his second of the night with 4:33 left to play. Gazley sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 9.6 seconds remaining on the clock.
Hershey is now 5-1-0-0 in January with two games remaining before the AHL All-Star break.
