Shark Snap Shot:

The Worcester Sharks (20-14-3-2, 45pts) chomped eight out of a possible eight points in four games last week and have won seven straight games overall and have points in eight straight (7-0-0-1). Worcester began the week with a 3-1 win over the Monarchs on Tuesday followed by a 5-4 shootout victory over Manchester on Friday. The Sharks closed out their five game home stand (5-0-0-0) with a 4-0 win over the Penguins on Saturday and wrapped up the week with their third win over the Monarchs on Sunday with a 4-3 win in Manchester.

Worcester sits in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with 45 points (20-14-3-2) and 7th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks are riding a franchise tying best seven game win streak and have points in a franchise tying best eight straight games (7-0-0-1). The eight game point streak is currently the longest current streak in the AHL.

Highlights from the week include three wins by goaltender Troy Grosenick which was capped off by his first shutout of the season with 25 saves vs. the Penguins on Saturday. Rookie Chris Tierney has been on fire as he picked up three goals and an assist in four games last week and now ranks 19th in the AHL in rookie points (7-13-20) despite only playing in 21 games. Daniil Tarasov has been solid as well as he picked up two goals and an assist last week and Taylor Fedun racked up four points (2-2-4) and is riding a three game point streak. Rookie Jeremy Langlois picked up four more points (1-3-4) and now ranks 16th among AHL rookies with 21 points (11-10-21). Taylor Doherty scored his 2nd goal of the season in his 200th professional game on Sunday in Manchester as the Sharks went 3-0-0-0 vs. the Monarchs last week.

Head Coach Roy Sommer was selected to coach the Eastern Conference AHL All-Stars as he will join Mike Stothers (Manchester) behind the bench. Sharks defenseman Matt Taormina was selected as an AHL All-Star for the first time as he has 20 points (5-15-20) in 39 games.

Last week saw the return of John McCarthy after the SJ Sharks agreed to reassign Adam Burish to the Chicago Wolves for the former Sharks captain. J-Mac picked up an assist in three games last week and ranks 3rd all-time in games played (245). As of Jan 19, Matt Tennyson and Melker Karlsson are with the SJ Sharks.

The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is forward Chris Tierney. The 20-year-old from Keswick, Ontario recorded four points (3-1-4) in four games last week - which included his first two goal game as a professional and his first game winning goal to lead the way offensively for the Sharks.

On Wednesday, the Sharks look for a franchise best 8th straight win with a 7pm start in Portland vs. the Pirates!

MILESTONE ALERT:

Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1307 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,643 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy surpassed John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history in the Sharks 3-1 win in Providence on Jan 4. Coach Sommer is four wins away from 600 in his career.

- Welcome back captain!...John McCarthy was reassigned by the St. Louis Blues to Worcester on Jan 14. J-Mac made his return to the Sharks line up on Jan 16 and added an assist. McCarthy ranks 3rd all-time in games played (245) and 5th in goals (54).

- Rookie Chris Tierney had 20 points (7-13-20) in 21 games in Worcester this season and two points (0-2-2) in 14 games for the San Jose Sharks. Tierney ranks 19th in the AHL in rookie points despite playing in just 21 games.

- Melker Karlsson has been impressive so far with the San Jose Sharks. Melker has 11 points (7-4-11) in 17 games with San Jose since his recall on Dec 8. He scored his 1st NHL goal on Dec 22 at Anaheim and also had a five game goal scoring streak!

- Freddie Hamilton leads the Worcester Sharks with 24 points (8-16-24) in 36 games and has played one game for the SJ Sharks this season (0-0-0).

- Matt Taormina leads all Worcester d-men (tied with Fedun) with 20 points (5-15-20) in 39 games. Matt picked up his 100th AHL assist vs. the Monarchs on Dec 26 and was selected to play in the AHL All Star Classic later this month in Utica.

- Micheal Haley leads the club in goals (11), leads the club in fighting majors (7), and tops in penalty minutes (67). Haley picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute on Dec 13 and has also played four games with the San Jose Sharks this season.

- Goaltender Troy Grosenick has a 15-6-3 record in Worcester with a 2.67 GAA and a .905 save %. Grosenick made his NHL debut on Nov 16 and set an NHL record for most saves in a shutout by a goaltender making his NHL debut (45) in the SJ Sharks 2-0 win at Carolina. Troy went 1-1-0 in two starts for the SJ Sharks and is currently in Worcester and is riding a six game win streak and is 8-1-2 in his last 11 starts overall.

- Top Rookies - Jeremy Langlois (16th) and Chris Tierney (19th) each rank in the top 20 in the AHL in rookie points.

- The Worcester Sharks are the least penalized team in the AHL with only 9.95 penalty minutes per game.

The Worcester Sharks (17-14-3-2, 39pts) picked up their season high 4th straight win after a 3-1 victory over the Manchester Monarchs (25-9-3-1, 54pts) in front of 1,451 fans at the DCU Center on Tuesday evening in game three of a five game home stand. Troy Grosenick made 32 saves in net while Daniil Tarasov, Micheal Haley, and Freddie Hamilton scored goals for Worcester as the Sharks now have points in a season high five straight games (4-0-0-1). Chris Tierney (3-4-7) extended his point streak to six games with an assist and Willie Coetzee (1-8-9) to four games as he added a helper as well as Worcester defeated the Monarchs for the first time in seven tries this season.

1.16.15 - Manchester 4 - Worcester 5- SOW - DCU Center - Worcester, MA

The Worcester Sharks (18-14-3-2, 41pts) kicked off their 3-in-3 weekend with a thrilling 5-4 shootout win over the Manchester Monarchs (25-9-3-2, 55pts) for their fifth straight victory in front of 3,122 fans at the DCU Center on Friday night. Taylor Fedun (1-1-2), Jeremy Langlois (1-2-3), Chris Tierney, and Travis Oleksuk scored goals for Worcester as the Sharks trailed 2-0, 3-2, but led 4-3 before the Monarchs forced overtime. Bryan Lerg scored the only goal in the shootout while Troy Grosenick made 30 saves and stopped all three shooters in the shootout as the Sharks improved to 4-0-0-0 on their five game home stand which ends Saturday night vs. the Penguins at 7pm. Colin Miller (1-2-3), Andrew Crescenzi, Adam Hughesman, and Michael Mersch scored for Manchester while JF Berube made 24 saves in net in the shootout loss.

1.17.15 - Wilkes-Barre Scranton 0 - Worcester 4- W - DCU Center - Worcester, MA

The Worcester Sharks (19-14-3-2, 43pts) stomped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (20-16-1-3, 44 pts) with a 4-0 shutout win for their sixth consecutive victory in front of 5,132 fans at the DCU Center on Saturday evening. Four Worcester players scored, including Daniil Tarasov (1-0-1,+1),Taylor Fedun (1-0-1,+1), Freddie Hamilton (1-0-1,+1) and Bryan Lerg (1-0-1,+1) in the Sharks' offensive onslaught. Troy Grosenick picked up his 15th win, making 25 saves on all 25 shots he saw in the shutout. Sharks now have points in seven consecutive games, as they sweep their five-game home stand after shutting out the Penguins 4-0 in their first meeting of the season.

1.18.15 - Manchester 3 - Worcester 4- W - Verizon Wireless Arena - Manchester, NH

The Worcester Sharks (20-14-3-2, 45pts) picked up their season high 7th straight win after a 4-3 victory over the Manchester Monarchs (26-10-3-2, 57pts) in front of 3,987 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon to conclude a 3-in-3 weekend. Chris Tierney scored twice while Matt Taormina and Taylor Doherty also found the back of the net for Worcester as JP Anderson made 29 saves in net for the victory. Willie Coetzee added two assists as the Sharks tied a franchise record with their 7th win in a row tying the mark from March 16-31 in 2007.

The Worcester Sharks (20-14-3-2, 45pts in 39gp) are in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division; which is 12 points behind the 1st place Monarchs (57pts in 41gp), two points behind the 2nd place Pirates (47pts in 41gp), one point ahead of the 3rd place Bruins (44pts in 41gp), and five points ahead of the 5th place IceCaps (40pts in 42gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*Quick Strikes (thanks Ballou)... On Oct 29 vs the Pirates, the first-period goals by Matt Tennyson and Micheal Haley, one at 16:37 and the next at 16:53, were four seconds shy of the team record. Garrett Stafford and Tomas Plihal scored 12 seconds apart in the second period on Feb 2, 2007 against Bridgeport at the DCU Center. It was only the fourth time in nine seasons the Sharks have scored goals less than 20 seconds apart.

*Fast start... Evan Trupp scored just 22 seconds into the first period on Dec 6 in St. John's and Bryan Lerg scored 15 seconds in vs. Manchester on Dec 26. Graham Mink holds the record for fastest goal just 11 seconds into the game on March 7, 2008.

*Good Boys... the Worcester Sharks are the least penalized team in the AHL averaging 9.95 minutes per game....the Sharks have been shorthanded just 122 times this season (3.12 per game) which is the least times shorthanded in the AHL.

*PPGA... the Sharks have allowed an AHL low 17 power play goals against in the first 39 games this season.

*Pro Debuts: Gus Young (Yale) made his professional debut in the Sharks 4-1 win over the Portland Pirates on Oct 26.

*Close Games... 23 of the first 39 Sharks games have been decided by a single goal...Worcester is 10-8-3-2 in games decided by one goal this season.

*Thanks Ballou... despite going 10-2 in the shootout last season, the Sharks are just 31W-47L overall (40.2%)....Worcester is 0-2 in the shootout this season.

*AHL First... Matt Taormina became the first player to score a 3-on-3 OT goal under the new overtime format in the AHL in the Sharks 3-2 overtime win in Binghamton on Oct 11. The goal came at 6:34 assisted by Evan Trupp and Taylor Fedun.

*Deja-Vu (almost).... Dylan Demelo scored at 6:33 of overtime on Oct 18.... Exactly one week after defenseman Matt Taormina scored at 6:34 of overtime on Oct 11.

*4 National Champions... The Sharks have four players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championship.... Gus Young was captain with Yale University in 2013....Travis Oleksuk with University Minnesota Duluth in 2011...Bryan Lerg with Michigan State in 2007.... and John McCarthy with BU in 2009.

*Memorial Cup... rookie defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser won the Memorial Cup in 2013 with the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) and was named to the 2013 Memorial Cup All-Star Team.

*Swedish Elite League Championship.... both Melker Karlsson and Petter Emanuelsson won back-to-back championships with Skelleftea AIK in the SWEHL in 2013 and 2014.

Doherty has seven goals, 29 assists, and 291 penalty minutes in 200 games with the Worcester Sharks. Taylor scored in his 200th game with Worcester on Jan 18 at Manchester.

*First Pro Goals this season... Ryan Carpenter scored his 1st pro goal (Andrew Hammond) in 3-2OTW at Binghamton on Oct 11...Chris Tierney scored his 1st (Malcolm Subban) in 4-2W vs. Providence on Nov 8.

*Sharks in the Atlantic... went 21-22-1-2 vs. the Atlantic in 2013-14 and are 12-8-1-1 in divisional play this season.

*Keeping your hat on (Thanks Ballou)... Worcester had gone 263 games without one of its players recording a hat trick before Daniil Tarasov scored three goals in Springfield on Oct 26. That was easily the longest active streak in the AHL. The Sharks' last hat trick had belonged to Dan DaSilva, who scored three times in Manchester during a 5-2 Worcester victory in Manchester on Feb. 14, 2010. Freddie Hamilton scored the first home hat trick in 206 games with three goals in a 5:12 span in the third period in a 4-1 win over the Pirates on Oct 26, 2014. It was the first home hat trick since P.J. Fenton had one on Feb. 28, 2009 in the Sharks' 7-3 victory over Springfield. In all, Worcester players have recorded hat tricks only ten times in the franchise's 667 games. The Sharks are 10-0 in those games and 1-15-3 in the 19 games in which the opposition has had a hat trick.

* Brothers... Freddie Hamilton is the older brother of Dougie Hamilton, who currently plays with the Boston Bruins.... Rylan Schwartz is the younger brother of Jayden Schwartz, who currently plays for the St. Louis Blues.

*Major Bonneau... Worcester Sharks tough guy Jimmy Bonneau has racked up 54 fighting majors in 145 games for the Worcester Sharks. Bonneau has set the Worcester Sharks record for most fighting majors in a season in 2011-12 with 22, surpassing Frazer McLaren (21 in 2008-09). Jimmy has 126 fighting majors in 340 AHL games along with 947 penalty minutes.
