Hershey Bears News Release
The Hershey Bears Hockey Club picked up four of a possible six points over their three-game weekend, as well as a record haul of stuffed toys for central Pennsylvania community charities.
The club began the weekend with a rare Friday home tilt, hosting the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Stanislav Galiev continued his hot streak, scoring the first two goals to pace Hershey to a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period. Joel Broda and Chris Brown pushed the Bears ahead by three early in the third period, getting two quick strikes past former Bears netminder David Leggio. Bridgeport came back with two goals of their own after a timeout, cutting the deficit to 4-3. But Brown's second of the game, followed by a Chris Conner tally, gave the Bears a 6-3 win and Philipp Grubauer his ninth win of the season. Tim Kennedy set a new season high with four assists in the game.
On Saturday at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Conner scored a first-period power play goal and an even-strength insurance marker in the third period, while Pheonix Copley stopped all but Bryan Rust's third-period goal to help the Bears defeat the Penguins 2-1. Kennedy earned assists on both goals.
The weekend finished up on Sunday back in Chocolatetown, as the Bears hosted the Penguins in the back end of a home-and-home set. The popular WGAL & Northwest Savings Bank Teddy Bear Toss took place, and many fans were still filing into GIANT Center when Steve Oleksy one- timed a feed from Kennedy past Jeff Zatkoff 39 seconds into the contest.
A record 17,295 stuffed toys were collected, and were scheduled to be distributed throughout central Pennsylvania charities in the new week. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would battle back, with Derrick Pouliot scoring the first of two goals to knot the score. Galiev beat Zatkoff in the second period to put Hershey ahead, but another Penguins equalizer would come off the skate of winger Bobby Farnham. Pouliot's second of the game came during a slew of power play chances for the visitors. His long-range slapper found its way past Grubauer early in the third - the lone power play goal scored by the Penguins on 26 chances in the six-game series. Hershey applied furious pressure but Zatkoff denied all 15 chances he faced in the third for the win.
Conner assisted on both Hershey goals on Sunday, garnering him Hershey's first CCM/AHL Player of the Week honor this season.
