December 8, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Oklahoma City Barons News Release
Recap of Week 9, Dec. 2-6 (3 games, 3-0-0-0)
Season record: 14-4-2-2, 3rd of 15 teams, Western Conference
- THE WEEK PAST: The Barons won all 3 games and extended their winning streak to a club-record 8. OKC also lengthened its club-best unbeaten streak without a regulation or overtime loss to 10, with 9 victories and 1 shootout loss in that span. On Tuesday, the Barons saw their fourth straight game end in overtime with a 1-0 win over the Utica Comets at the Cox Center. OKC won all four of those consecutive OT finishes and owns a league-best 6 OT wins and 16 OT/SO points. The Barons are 6-2 in overtime finishes, equaling the club mark for an entire season. On Friday, the Barons began a 3-game trip with a 4-1 win at Grand Rapids. Andrew Miller recorded his first professional 2-goal game while Jason Williams had 3 assists. On Saturday, Brad Hunt had 2 goals plus an assist in a 5-3 win at Milwaukee. In addition to the ongoing club-record winning and unbeaten streaks, the Barons' win on Saturday was their fifth straight on the road, matching the club record reached on 4 previous occasions.
- THE WEEK AHEAD: It's a week featuring a mixture of road and home contests, as the Barons conclude a 3-game trip with a 7:30 pm (CST) game on Wednesday against the Texas Stars. It's the seventh of 12 meetings between the teams and the fifth straight to take place at Cedar Park Center. The Barons are 4-1-1-0 against the Stars this season, 3-0-1-0 at Cedar Park Center, where all 4 previous games have ended in overtime. On Friday and Saturday, the Barons host the Grand Rapids Griffins at 7 pm at the Cox Center in the second and third of 4 matchups between the teams.
- WILLIAMS' STREAK CURRENTLY TOPS IN AHL: Jason Williams has at least 1 point in 9 straight games, a team best point streak this season and the longest active AHL streak entering this week. Williams has 4 goals and 10 assists during the streak. The longest AHL point streak this season is 10, set by Bridgeport's Alan Quine from Oct. 25-Nov. 16. Williams opened the season with a point in each of his first 8 outings, then went 3 games without a point before starting the current streak. For the season, his 25 points (9 goals, 16 assists) is tied for second in the AHL, 1 behind Charles Hudon of the Hamilton Bulldogs.
- HIGH-RANKING HUNT: Brad Hunt enters this week third in the AHL among defenseman in points with 21, including 7 goals, yet has played the fewest games (14) of any of the top 13 blueline scorers. Hunt joined the Barons Nov. 8 after starting the season in Edmonton. Hunt leads all AHLers in points with 21 dating to his first league game this season on Nov. 8. Hunt set the Barons' mark for points in a season by a defenseman last season with 50 when he was named a second-team post-season AHL All-Star. Hunt's 2 goals and 1 assist on Saturday comprised his fourth 3-point game of the season. Three points is a single-game team high so far in 2014-15. Hunt has 4 of the team's 10 3-point games.
- NET GAINS: During the Barons' 8-game winning streak, each of the goaltenders has won 4 games and recorded a shutout. Richard Bachman has a 1.45 goals-against average and .952 save percentage during the streak, stopping 119 of 125 shots. Laurent Brossoit owns a 1.92 GAA and .941 save percentage in his 4 wins during the streak, denying 127 of 135 shots.
- ODDS AND ENDS: The Barons have the fewest regulation losses (4) in the AHL and begin this week with 32 points, tied with the Manchester Monarchs for the second-highest total in the AHL. The Utica Comets, Rockford IceHogs and Springfield Falcons all have 35 points. OKC's .727 standing point percentage is tied for second in the league behind Utica's .729. Ryan Hamilton wrapped up the week with 1 goal and 1 assist in each of the final 2 games, at Grand Rapids and Milwaukee. Josh Winquist, recalled by the Barons from ECHL Bakersfield on Thursday, notched his first AHL point with an assist on Saturday in Milwaukee. Winquist departed the ECHL leading the league in assists with 18 and topping all rookie scorers with 23 points. Not including the empty-net goals (or the shots producing them) in each of the past 2 games, the Barons scored 7 goals on 39 combined shots in the wins at Grand Rapids and Milwaukee. OKC matched its season-low shot total on Friday with 21 before lowering it with 20 shots on Marek Mazanec and Magnus Hellberg on Saturday in Milwaukee. Starter Mazanec was replaced by Hellberg, marking the first time this season the Barons had faced both opposing netminders in a game. OKC's penalty killers have been perfect in the past 4 games (13-for-13) and have denied 25 of the last 26 opposing power plays over the past 7 games. The Barons' power play went 3-for-7 in the past 2 games and is second in the league at 25.3 percent.
