State College Spikes News Release

JAMESTOWN, NY - Dilson Herrera, who joined the State College Spikes just two days ago, broke an eighth-inning tie with his first home run in a State College uniform as the Spikes downed the Jamestown Jammers, 3-2, at Russell Diethrick Park in their final road contest of 2012.

Herrrera, who smashed seven home runs as a member of the Pirates' title-winning affiliate in the Gulf Coast League this year, had collected just one hit in his first ten at-bats with State College (33-39). However, that changed when the 5'10" infielder sent a 2-2 pitch from Jamestown (31-40) reliever Sean Donatello (1-2) over the left field wall for a solo home run to snap a 2-2 tie.

The Spikes' newcomer also followed in the footsteps of D.J. Crumlich, who went 3-for-4 and had broken a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with his own solo home run to left field off of Jammers starter Blake Logan.

State College took the first lead of the game in the game's initial frame, as Chris Diaz and Crumlich each singled to set up a Jesus Vasquez RBI single to make it 1-0. The Spikes rapped seven hits over the first three innings, but left six runners on base and were unable to increase their lead.

Jamestown tied the game in the fourth inning with a walk to Cody Keefer, a double by Jesus Solorzano and Avery Romero's run-scoring groundout off of State College starter Dovydas Neverauskas.

Neverauskas acquitted himself well in his Spikes debut, though. The first ever Lithuanian to play for State College went four innings and yielded only one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four.

After Crumlich's long ball in the fifth, the Jammers knotted the game back up in the bottom half of the inning with a Juancito Martinez triple and Yefri Perez's double one batter later, setting up Herrera's late game heroics.

Clario Perez (1-3) earned the win in relief for State College with four innings of one-run ball on the mound, giving up four hits and notching two strikeouts.

Kyle Haynes (8) struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning to nail down the victory and earn the save for the Spikes.

Donatello took the loss after giving up a total of one run on two hits and striking out one batter. Logan lasted five innings on the mound for Jamestown, yielding two runs on eight hits while striking out seven.

Solorzano ended the night 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Perez also collected a pair of doubles for the Jammers.

The win enabled the Spikes to split the season series with the Jammers, 5-5, and split the four-game series at Russell Diethrick Park. State College's final road record on the year stands at 15-24.

The Spikes have four more home games on the 2012 season, starting on Sunday with a 6:05 p.m. matchup against the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
