ABERDEEN, MD (Saturday, September 1): The Hudson Valley Renegades clinched the McNamara Division crown with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Aberdeen IronBirds Saturday night in front of 6,580 fans at Ripken Stadium. The Renegades (49-23) took their third straight victory and limited the host IronBirds (26-46) to just seven baserunners over the course of the game. The division title is the second for the 'Gades since their inception in 1994, and the first since 1998, when current manager Jared Sandberg was a player on the team. The Renegades are now one win away from matching the 1998 club for the most wins in a single season in team history.

Hudson Valley opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Designated hitter Justin O'Conner slashed a one-out double up the third base line against Aberdeen starter Sebastian Vader (1-8). O'Conner moved up to third base on a ground out to first by first baseman Michael Williams. Left fielder Joel Caminero pounded a grounder into left field for a single, scoring O'Conner and giving the 'Gades an early 1-0 lead.

The score stayed 1-0 until the seventh inning. Caminero got the Renegades going with a one-out single to right field off reliever Bennett Parry, and right fielder Charles Epperson drew a walk to put runners on first and second. With center fielder Marty Gantt at the plate, the Renegades attempted a double steal, but Caminero was tagged out at third, leaving Epperson at second with two outs. Gantt then hit a sinking liner into right field; Manny Hernandez slid and almost made a terrific catch, but the ball ticked off his glove and fell to the ground. Gantt made it to second and Epperson scored on the RBI double, making it 2-0 in favor of Hudson Valley. Ryan Garton gave up a one-out hit in the ninth, but got the next to batters to end the ballgame and give the Renegades the win.

Hudson Valley starter Matt Spann (4-5) threw six excellent innings for the win, allowing three hits and one walk against two strikeouts. Brandon Henderson allowed a hit and a walk in his two innings of relief. Garton earned his seventh save, with one hit and one strikeout in his one inning of action.

Vader took the loss despite a superb performance, allowing one run on five hits in six innings; he walked none and struck out a career-best eight. Parry allowed one run on two hits and two walks in two innings, striking out one. Janser Severino pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts in his New York-Penn League debut.

The Renegades will go for the sweep of the IronBirds Sunday afternoon. NYPL All-Star Jeff Ames will get the start for the Renegades against Aberdeen lefty Lex Rutledge. First pitch is scheduled for 2:35 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show starting at 2:20 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
