Rockland County, NY - The New York Boulders watched an early lead disappear before rallying late for a 6-5 win over the Washington Wild Things on Saturday night at Palisades Credit Union Park.
Ray Hernandez led the Boulders' offense with four hits and three RBI.
James Mulry got the win in relief, raising his season mark to 4-3, while Jesus Balaguer was tagged with the loss, falling to 1-2. Tanner Kiest recorded his fifth save of the season after tossing a perfect ninth inning.
Tied at 4-4 in the seventh, Washington, which trailed by four runs after one inning, grabbed a 5-4 lead on a Scotty Dubrule two-out bloop double to center off Mulry that plated Nick Ward, who had singled earlier in the frame off Alex Carrillo.
New York, though, answered in the bottom of the inning against Balaguer, the Wild Things' third pitcher of the night. Walks to Milton Smith, Jr. and Zach Kirtley sandwiched a stolen base and wild pitch that left runners on the corners with no one out for Kevonte Mitchell, who bounced into a double play that scored Smith, Jr. and tied the game at 5-5.
Ryan Ramiz then drew the third walk of the inning and swiped second base before Hernandez singled, his fourth hit and third RBI of the night, gave New York a 6-5 advantage.
The Boulders had struck for four first inning runs against Washington starter Ryan Hennen. With one out, Smith, Jr. hit the first home run of his three-year professional career into the short porch in right field. The home run came in Smith, Jr.'s 144th game, 562nd plate appearance and 484th official at-bat.
Before the first inning would end, New York added a two-run single by Hernandez and an RBI single from Gian Martellini,
Washington inched their way to within one with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Wild Things got solo home runs from Andrew Czech in the third and Grant Heyman in the fourth, the blasts were Czech'a 11th of the year and Heyman's fifth of the season.
The Wild Things then touched up Boulders' starter Alex Mack for a run in the fifth on an RBI double from Nick Ward that cut the Washington deficit to 4-3.
Washington then tied it in the sixth off Carrillo, a bases loaded wild pitch scoring Heyman with the equalizer, squaring the game at 4-4.
