Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO, TX - Another huge offensive output from Teoscar Hernandez and a solid start from Francis Martes led the Corpus Christi Hooks to a 7-3 victory in the series opener over the Frisco RoughRiders on Wednesday night in front of 6,735 at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The Hooks (42-22) improved to 8-4 on the year against the Riders (36-27) and will need just one win in its last six games to clinch a second consecutive Texas League South Division title.
As previously mentioned, Hernandez played a huge role with his solid hitting. The Hooks' right-fielder went 3-5 with a pair of two-run homers in the second and fourth innings and also doubled off the right-center field wall in the sixth.
Nick Tanielu opened the scoring with a single that scored Alex Bregman in the first inning.
Chase McDonald plated a run in the third, an RBI-single that brought home Derek Fisher and gave Corpus Christi a 4-0 advantage after three.
Francis Martes was lights out on the hill at the beginning of his outing. He retired twelve of the first thirteen batters he faced and had just 44 pitches through four innings. In all, Martes (4-2) went 6 1/3 innings, surrendering five hits, three runs, striking out three, walking two, and earning the win.
Frisco scored one run in the fifth off of Martes. Luis Mendez had an infield single off the glove of the pitcher that enabled Evan Van Hoosier (who led off the inning with a triple) to come in and score.
The Hooks got that run back in the seventh off the bat of J.D. Davis. His eleventh homer of the year was a bomb off of the batter's eye in center that made it 7-1 and effectively restored Corpus Christi's six-run advantage.
After Martes gave up a single and hit a batter, the RoughRiders battled back with run-scoring singles by Andy Ibanez and Ryan Cordell in the seventh off of reliever Michael Freeman to cut the deficit to 7-3. The Corpus Christi southpaw gave way to Aaron West in the ninth after allowing two baserunners. West struck out the only batter he faced (Cordell) to end the ballgame and get his seventh save of the season.
Freeman went 2 1/3 innings, yielding three hits, one walk, no runs, and two strikeouts.
Frisco pitcher Reed Garrett (2-1) lost his first decision of the year by going five innings, conceding six runs, ten hits, two walks, and fanning two Hooks.
Corpus Christi and Frisco will play two games at Dr Pepper Ballpark on Thursday starting at 5:05. The second game is a make-up of the washout from May 15th at Whataburger Field. You can hear all the action on Newsradio 1360 KKTX with the pregame show beginning no later than 5:00.
