Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - After coming off a road trip that saw the team play nine games in eight days, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (29-36) enjoyed the comfort of home as the offense erupted for a season-high 18 hits in a 12-6 win over the division-leading Springfield Cardinals (36-29) in the series opener at Arvest Ballpark on Wednesday night.
Locked in a scoreless game, the Naturals offense exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning by way of some two-strike offense as all of the team's six hits in the inning came in two-strike counts. Cam Gallagher led off the frame with a double and scored on a Jack Lopez RBI single. The offense would continue to pile it on as Terrance Gore, Logan Moon, and Ryan O'Hearn would all add two-run singles to stake the Naturals to a commanding 8-0 lead. The eight runs in that inning matched the total runs the Naturals had scored in their previous five games. In the process, Northwest Arkansas chased Springfield starter Corey Baker (2-5, 5.10) in the frame and now own a 1-1 record against the right-hander.
The Naturals would add three more runs to their total in the seventh inning highlighted by an O'Hearn solo home run into the bullpen in right for his fifth of the year. With the 2-for-4 and three RBI night at the plate, the Naturals first baseman has gone 10-for-26 in his last seven games with three home runs, two doubles, and six RBI. The twelfth and final run of the game from Northwest Arkansas would come in the form of a sacrifice fly in the eighth by Allan de San Miguel. Allan de San Miguel had himself a night at the plate as the catcher went 4-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored. Every Naturals player recorded at least one hit in the game while six of the nine recorded multi-hit games.
Not to be outdone, the Naturals pitching staff was dominant at times during the game as the combination of Kris Medlen, Ashton Goudeau, Evan Beal, Eric Stout, and Matt Alvarez tallied 14 strikeouts. Medlen, on Major League rehab assignment from Kansas City, got the start and fired 2.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits, and struck out five. Goudeau (2-3, 2.86) came on in relief for the win as he posted a similar line with 2.2 scoreless and four strikeouts.
Northwest Arkansas will continue their current eight (8) game homestand with another game against the Springfield Cardinals (Double-A St. Louis Cardinals) tomorrow night - Thursday, June 16 - with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. for Buck Night on Thirsty Thursday by Crain Buick GMC of Springdale. The Cardinals will send RHP Luke Weaver (2-0, 0.73 ERA) to the hill while the Naturals will counter with RHP Pedro Fernandez (0-1, 3.97 ERA). You can catch the live play-by-play action with the Voice of the Naturals Benjamin Kelly on your home for Naturals baseball on KQSM 92.1-FM The Ticket at 6:45 p.m. for the Indigo Sky Casino Pregame Show leading to first pitch at 7:05 p.m. from Arvest Ballpark.
