Hens Split Double-Header with Indy

July 21, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens and Indians split a scheduled doubleheader at Fifth Third Field on Saturday night as Toledo took the first game, 3-1, while Indy won the latter 9-3.

Game one belonged to the starting pitchers as Hens starter Thad Weber carried a no-hitter into the fifth. Indians starter Rudy Owens carried his own one-hitter into the fifth, but the Hens tagged him for two hits and a run as an Audy Ciriaco single gave the Mud Hens a 1-0 lead.

The Indians tied it back up in the sixth with an RBI double by Chase d'Arnaud, but Ben Guez and Jerad Head delivered with RBIs in the bottom of the inning as the Hens took a 3-1 lead.

Weber pitched a complete game in the victory, striking out seven while allowing one run on five hits.

Game two had a much different vibe to it as the Indians jumped out to a big lead with a seven-run second inning. The Indians combined for seven unearned runs on six hits off Hens starter Rob Waite to take a 7-0 lead. Waite was off the hook for any earned runs after an Argenis Diaz error allowed the long inning to continue.

The Hens got one back in the bottom of the second after an Audy Ciriaco RBI double cut the deficit to six. Another run was added in the bottom of the third after Danny Dorn singled with the bases loaded to make it 7-2.

The final run for the Hens came across in the fifth after a Jerad Head RBI single.

Luke Putkonen pitched in relief for Waite and was stellar until the seventh when he allowed two more Indy runs to make it 9-3.

The Hens and Indians meet again tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. Ramon Garcia is scheduled to make the start for Toledo.

Game Notes

The Hens are now 3-5 in doubleheader games this season.

The Hens turned six double plays between both games.

Thad Weber's complete game was the sixth of his career and his second as a Hen.
