Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Norfolk Tides, 5-1, on Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Tides jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning and coasted to the win from there.
After two scoreless innings, Norfolk (52-50) used the long ball to get on the board in the top of the third inning. Nate McLouth blasted a two-out, two-run home run off of Syracuse starter Mitch Atkins to give the Tides a 2-0 lead.
The Tides tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning. Brandon Waring led off the frame with a single, Luis Exposito moved him to second with another single, and Blake Davis scored Waring with the third Tides base hit of the inning. Davis's 28th RBI of the season put Norfolk up 3-0.
Syracuse (46-54) responded with a run off Tides starter Jake Arrieta in the bottom of the fourth. Brett Carroll doubled to deep left-center field to drive home Mark Teahen with the Chiefs' only run of the game.
It didn't take long for the Tides to respond though. Lew Ford pounded an Atkins pitch over the wall in left field for Norfolk's second two-run homer of the night. Ford's 11th home run of the year made the score 5-1 Tides.
The Chiefs threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases with two outs. Arrieta stiffened, though, and forced Eury Perez to ground out to second to end the inning.
Once again, the Chiefs put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Norfolk reliever Greg Burke escaped the jam without allowing a run.
Zach Phillips threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning to close the door on the Chiefs.
The Chiefs and Tides play again at 5:00 Sunday evening at Alliance Bank Stadium. Right-hander Yunesky Maya is scheduled to start for Syracuse. Lefty Dana Eveland is set to counter for Norfolk.
