Hendricks Wins as Birds Crush Keys 9-4

FREDERICK, MD - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, got another strong outing from all-star Kyle Hendricks Friday, clobbering the Frederick Keys 9-4 at Harry Grove Stadium.

For the third time this season Hendricks completed eight innings, allowing only two runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked none. The pitcher earned his second win of the year in his 11th quality start, the best total in the Carolina League. The win was the first for Hendricks since May 15th, a seven inning outing at Winston-Salem.

The offense also finally backed up Hendricks, scoring nine runs after the righty had picked up only 23 total runs of support in the first half. The offense started in the first, when Frederick starter Tim Berry walked Odubel Herrera to lead it off. Herrera scored two batters later, after stealing second, on a Christian Villanueva RBI single.

Myrtle Beach added three more in the third with an RBI single by Hanser Alberto, his first hit as a Pelican in his first game since being summoned from Low-A Hickory. That knock was followed by a sac fly from Tomas Telis and an RBI double from Brett Nicholas, his team best 20th.

In the fifth inning the Pelicans battered Berry again, sending six to the plate and scoring two more. Herrera led off with a double, scoring on an error off the bat of Villanueva. It was the third run of the game for Herrera. Telis followed with an RBI single to score Alberto, who had bunted for a hit earlier in the inning. It was 6-2 at that point.

Lefty Trent Howard made his first relief appearance of the season, entering for Frederick in the sixth, but the bloodletting continued. Myrtle sent eight batters to hit with the first three, Josh Richmond, Jake Skole and Cafe Martinez reaching without the benefit of a hit. The Pelicans, who came in with four bases loaded hits all season, then came through with two -- singles by Herrera and Villanueva. It was 9-2 when the inning was out.

Francisco Mendoza finished the outing allowing two runs on an Aaron Baker homer in the ninth. The Pelicans move to 2-0 in the second half with the win. Hendricks is now 2-7 with Berry falling to 0-1. Both Telis and Villanueva finished with three RBI and Martinez saw his 13 game hitting streak come to a close, despite a two run night.
