Flint, Mich. - Everett Clark scored two goals, Kole Sherwood recorded two assists, Connor Hicks made 24 saves and Mathieu Henderson scored with 18 seconds remaining in overtime to earn the Firebirds two points on the road before more than 3,300 fans Friday in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
Flint continued their impressive record of scoring the first goal of the game for the 10th time in 11 games this season when Everett Clark deflected a pass from Dennis Busby in the slot past the Greyhounds' Joseph Raaymakers at 11:23 of the opening frame. Flint's Kole Sherwood picked up an assist on the goal and the Firebirds led in shots 10-0.
Then, with nine seconds remaining in the first period, Sault Ste. Marie's Morgan Forst tied the contest on a power-play. Zachary Senyshyn skated toward the goal from the right circle in the Firebirds' zone before the puck was knocked off his stick to the high slot right to Frost. Frost scored, glove-side past Connor Hicks for the Greyhounds' first of goals on the man-advantage.
Nearing the mid-way point of the game, Flint's Dane Johnstone caused a turnover in the neutral zone before feeding Cullen Mercer in front of the Firebirds' bench. Mercer crossed the Sault Ste. Marie line and used the Greyhound defenseman as a screen, scoring blocker-side from the left-wing circle.
The Greyhounds tied the game 2-2 when Connor Timmins performed a diving play to keep the puck in the Flint zone while on the power-play. Timmins returned back to his feet and dished the puck to Bobby MacIntyre at the right-wing circle. MacIntyre then scored short-side with 2:12 remaining in the middle period.
Everett Clark scored his second goal of the evening, third goal of the season 4:20 into the third period. An impressive forecheck effort from Luke Kirwan and Kole Sherwood led to Sherwood finding the puck behind the Greyhounds' net and centering it to Clark who buried to take the lead for the third time of the game.
The Greyhounds would tie the contest for the final time with 6:23 remaining in the game when MacIntyre skated up the right-wing into the Flint zone. MacIntyre pulled-up at the right circle, resulting in the diving Firebird defenseman to slide out of play before MacIntyre found Hayden Verbeek crashing the net and scoring to force overtime.
Then, with 18 seconds remaining in overtime, Mathieu Henderson found a loose puck in the slot found twine behind Rayymakers for his second goal of the season, earning the Firebirds their first road victory of the 2016-17 campaign.
With the victory, Flint improved to 6-4-0-1 on the season and are now in 7th place in the Western Conference. The Firebirds return back to Flint tomorrow night for a Saturday evening battle with the Windsor Spitfires at 7 p.m. (ET).
