Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs traveled to Mississauga to take on the Steelheads for the first of 6 meetings this season. Last season, the IceDogs and the Steelheads split their season series at 3 apiece, so the 'Dogs came into the game looking to get the early advantage in the series. This game was also Ben Jones' first game since suffering an injury earlier this month.

The game got off to a fast paced start, with both teams exchanging shots early. Mississauga capitalized first less than 5 minutes into the first period. They would add another goal within two minutes of the first to take the early 2-0 lead. Despite the early score, Incze came up with some huge saves to maintain the score as the period progressed. As the period wore on, the IceDogs were able to generate some good offensive chances, being just a bounce (and a few posts) away from breaking the goose egg.

The second period started a little rough for the IceDogs as Mississauga jumped out and scored to make it 3-0 within the first minute. Shortly thereafter, Danial Singer tallied his first OHL regular season goal off a beauty spinning pass from Ben Jones! Singer's goal was assisted by Ben Jones and Oliver Castleman. At the halfway mark, Chris Paquette was able to capitalize, bringing the IceDogs within 1 with a top shelf goal! Castleman picked up the lone assist on Paquette's goal. With less than 5 minutes to go in the period, Mississauga snuck the puck past Incze as he guarded the post to make it 4-2. The second period was a strong effort by the IceDogs, showing that all important compete level.

The final frame got off to a back and forth start again, but Mississauga was able to capitalize on a loose puck in the crease to give the Steelheads a 3 goal lead. Throughout the rest of the period, the IceDogs continued to battle in the Mississauga zone. In the second half of the period, Chris Paquette scored to bring the IceDogs within 2 off a blast from Ryan Mantha. Ben Jones also picked up an assist on the goal. With less than 5 minutes left to play in the game, Oliver Castleman picked up his 3rd point of the night by scoring his own goal to bring the game within 1. Matthew Philip picked up the assisted on Castleman's goal. Less than two minutes later, Ben Jones and Chris Paquette were on a two on one heading into the Mississauga zone and Jones beat the Mississauga goalie going 5-hole to tie this game up at 5!

60 minutes proved not to be enough for these rivals. The IceDogs headed into sudden death overtime with all the momentum from the late game heroics. After a series of spectacular saves by Colton Incze and near scoring chances, Mississauga picked off an attempt to clear the puck out of the zone and scored to give the Steelheads the win.

The Niagara IceDogs will be back in action at home on Thursday, October 27th against the Saginaw Spirit. Ticket's are starting at just $15 and can be purchased online here ncyNIDV_WEB) .
