Erie Otters News Release
Owen Sound jumped off to a quick lead when Jonah Gadjovich banked a sharp-angle shot off Erie goaltender Jake Lawr to put the Attack up 1-0 less than a minute into the first period. Though Erie did not register a shot on goal for the first six minutes of the game, Allan McShane scored his third of the season on a quick snap-shot in front of the Attack's goal. Acting as McShane's playmaker was Alex DeBrincat, second on the Otters in scoring, who set up his rookie linemate with a tape-to-tape pass after winning his battle in the corner. Renewed by McShane's goal, Erie battled hard and came ahead in shots (12-7) to close out the first period, 1-1.
Despite another slow start in which the Otters failed to register a shot through seven minutes of play, Erie scored the first goal of the second period. Shaun Bily slipped through the Owen Sound defenders to rifle a hard shot through Attack goaltender Michael McNiven, giving Erie the 2-1 lead. Patrick Fellows--whose backhand pass allowed for Bily's opportunity--and Brett Neumann were credited with the assists. Owen Sound's Kevin Hancock tied the game at 13:36; Erie regained the lead on its very next shift, as Taylor Raddysh rushed in on goal and jammed a puck through McNiven to make it 3-2 at 13:48. Owen Sound's Zachary Roberts tied the game less than two minutes later, completing a series of three goals in under three minutes of play. Erie went into the third period tied 3-3.
Goaltenders Lawr and McNiven held fast for the third period to keep both teams without a tiebreaking goal, denying several grade "A" opportunities apiece for their respective teams. Overtime was a back-and-forth endeavor until Owen Sound's Maksim Sushko cut through Erie's defensive zone and put a hard shot on goal, catching Lawr out of position and securing the victory for the Attack.
Erie played with five defenseman: Otters blueliner Jordan Sambrook was injured against the Niagara IceDogs and will be out for some time; IceDogs' Aaron Haydon was suspended 6 games for the hit on Sambrook. Jake Lawr made 32 saves on 36 shots in the loss; Michael McNiven saved 22 of 25 for the Owen Sound victory.
Erie battles Owen Sound on October 22 in the second of their back-to-back games against the Attack.
