September 9, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Somerset Patriots News Release
The Somerset Patriots are hosting a special tribute night on Wednesday, September 9th for former pitcher Darrin Winston who died of leukemia in August of 2008.
THE PATRIOTS ARE ASKING ALL FANS TO COME SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE WINSTON FAMILY!
Winston, a left-handed pitcher, played for Somerset from 1998 through 2002. He finished his time with the Patriots with a 22-17 record, a 4.50 ERA, and 216 strikeouts in 288.1 innings pitched in 114 games played. Winston was always available for community programs, to sign autographs, and represent the team on and off the field. His work as a pitcher and team ambassador made him an instant fan favorite.
Winston was a Bishop Ahr High School grad who moved on to be one of Rutgers University's best pitchers. He still holds school career records for starts (38), innings (278), victories (26), and complete games (22).
Before joining the Patriots, Winston had Major League Baseball experience with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997-1998, where he was 4-2 in 34 games.
The Patriots will have a special pre-game ceremony honoring Winston with family and friends in attendance beginning approximately 6:05 pm. There will be special fundraising for Winston's family with group tickets and a 50/50 raffle at the ballpark.
"This is a night that we've decided to host to pay tribute to one of our all-time fan and team favorites. Darrin was an exceptional person on and off the field and we invite fans to be a part of this special night to honor Darrin's memory with his family and friends," said Patrick McVerry, President/General Manager of the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club.
The Patriots have decided to host the night on September 9, 2009 (9/9/09) because Winston wore the number nine throughout his Patriots career.
