(Central Islip, N.Y., September 9, 2009) - The Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks 5-1 on Wednesday at Citibank Park.

Newark got on the scoreboard first with a two-run double off the bat of Kennard Jones in the top of the fourth inning. Long Island cut the deficit in half in the subsequent frame as Freddie Thon's RBI sacrifice fly pushed the score to 2-1.

The Bears added some insurance in the top of the ninth inning to preserve the win. Carl Everett's solo homer and Victor Mercedes' two-run double off Ducks' reliever Joe Valentine pushed the lead to 5-1.

Bears' starter Ramiro Mendoza (4-4) earned the win firing seven innings, allowing no earned runs, while striking out nine. B.J. LaMura (10-9) was hit with the loss as he tossed a season-high eight innings, surrendering seven hits and two runs, with four punch-outs.

Johnny Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the defeat.

The Ducks hit the road for a seven-game road trip beginning Thursday at Bridgeport. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Long Island returns to Citibank Park for the final homestand of the season, Thursday, September 17, and welcome the Camden Riversharks in for a four-game series. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with the Citibank Park gates opening at 5:35 p.m. The first 1,500 fans will receive Water Bottles by The Rose Brucia Educational Foundation.
